Prince Harry may have to renounce a very important part of his ties to the royal family should he follow through on becoming a US citizen.
In an interview with Good Morning America, the Duke of Sussex candidly revealed his quiet plans to go through the process.
He said: “The American citizenship is a thought that has crossed my mind but is certainly not something that is a high priority for me right now.”
When asked why he hasn’t gone through with the process, he simply said, “I have no idea”.
Royal expert Russell Myers commented on the Today Show on Friday about the possibility and consequences of the Duke gaining dual citizenship.
“To be a US citizen you have to renounce all princely titles, titles of nobility,” he revealed. “And haven’t they made such a big play about these titles?”
The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) notes a policy on their site called “Renunciation of Title or Order of Nobility” that may require the Duke of Sussex to no longer be referenced as such.
“Any applicant who has any titles of heredity or positions of nobility in any foreign state must renounce the title or the position,” per the policy, listed under “Oath of Allegiance” to the United States.
“The applicant must expressly renounce the title in a public ceremony and USCIS must record the renunciation as part of the proceedings.”
The USCIS points out that “failure to renounce the title of position” could be considered a “lack of attachment” to the US Constitution.
In the past, the British royal family has absorbed people from overseas. The late Queen’s husband Prince Phillip was from a Danish family and born in Greece.
However, for a Royal with just British citizenship to become a citizen of another country would likely be seen as a controversial move on Harry’s part.
