Look, I can’t say I was shocked that Grimes and Elon Musk did not last, but their breakup was certainly announced out of no where, especially considering the pair appeared to be a pretty solid unit (at least from the outside).
But now, in her latest banger, ‘Player of Games,’ Grimes has spilled spicy deets about the relationship (and breakup) and we finally have some of the answers we’ve been seeking.
The basic theme of the song is about the protagonist (a.k.a. Grimes) being in love with the “greatest gamer.”
“I’m in love with the greatest gamer,” she sings, “but he’ll always love the game more than he loves me.”
So basically what she’s saying here is that he’s too attached to his work to spend time with her. And not just his work, but also literal video games.
Interestingly, according to NDTV.com, Musk was creating video games before he became a millionaire at 27 years old. In fact, Musk even tweeted in January that he’s still obsessed with playing Halo. So, like many relationships I know, it looks like his incessant video game-use really impacted their relationship.
Later on in the track, Grimes sings: “Sail away to the cold expanse of space, even love couldn’t keep you in your place.”
Musk told Page Six back in September that his work was a huge factor in his split from Grimes.
“It’s mostly that my work at SpaceX and Tesla requires me to be primarily in Texas or traveling overseas and her work is primarily in LA,” he said at the time.
Grimes and Musk dated for three years and share one child together: son X Æ A-12, aka “Baby X.”
