Nine scotches Richard Wilkins rumour - NEWS.com.au

Veteran TV reporter Richard Wilkins is “fighting fit” and will make a return to Channel 9 next year, despite concerns about an alleged tremor.

Veteran TV reporter Richard Wilkins is “fighting fit” and will make a return to TV next year.

Nine’s news director Darren Wick shot down rumours that Wilkins’ workload would be cut back next year amid concerns of his health, saying the 67-year-old entertainment reporter is fine.

“Richard’s absolutely fine. He’s fighting fit and will be with us for many years to come,” Mr Wick told The Daily Telegraph.

Fans of the Weekend Today host became concerned for his health after noticing what they believed to be a hand tremor.

Wilkins was diagnosed with Covid-19 in March last year following an event with Hollywood heavyweight Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson at the Opera House.

At the time, he spoke of his surprise at the news from his home while quarantining.

“You could have knocked me over with a feather last night when I got the call,” Wilkins said.

“I feel fine. I feel 100 per cent. I don’t have a sore throat, runny nose, headache.

“I feel terrific. Yet I contracted the thing and tested positive for it.”

However he also said the diagnosis was “terrifying”.

“Having to call my kids and tell them this stuff wasn’t much fun. The weird thing is the only thing you want to do more than anything in the world is hug your kids at a time like this.”

On April 1, Wilkins got the all-clear. His only symptom during his time with the virus was a small tickle in the back of his throat.

Earlier this year, he told TheDaily Telegraph he has regular check-ups and takes care of himself through diet and exercise.

“When you’re young, tall and bulletproof, you don’t think that anything can take you down, but just this year I’ve been to three or four funerals for people my age, which is very sobering and a wake-up call if there ever was one,” he said.

Wilkins appears to be in good health at the moment, and was snapped two weeks ago at a lunch at Otto Ristorante Woolloomooloo with John Laws, Ben Fordham and Peter Stefanovic.
