It’s a scene that genuinely caught many fans by surprise, and Sarah Snook reveals what was going on in Shiv’s mind.
Beloved by audiences and critics, Succession has been lauded for its intoxicating and complex storytelling about a super wealthy family and the depths they’ll plunge to for control of the its business empire.
Led and manipulated by the patriarch Logan Roy, his adult children Shiv, Kendall, Roman and Connor spend most of their waking hours attempting to gain an advantage – and thereby their father’s love they desperately crave.
One day someone’s fortunes are up, the next it’s another’s.
This season, Shiv, the only daughter of the Roy clan has had a whirlwind arc – so far – being named president before being sidelined by her less scrupulous brother, Roman.
The personal toll to Shiv’s quest is seen through many scenes, but it’s one in particular that Australian actor Sarah Snook revealed, as part of AACTA Screenfest, was her favourite scene to film – and it doesn’t even have any dialogue.
The scene in question happens in the current season’s third episode, directly following another in which Shiv has been publicly humiliated by Kendall after he sabotages her debut speech as Waystar Royco president.
As she started to speak, several speakers surreptitiously set up by Kendall starts to blast Nirvana’s Rape Me, a not-so-subtle reference to the cruise scandal which embroiled the company.
Shiv strides into Kendall’s unoccupied office, sees the evidence that implicates him, picks up his notebook and then spits in it. It’s so petty, and so revealing.
“Well, it’s like what do you do?” Snook explained. “Shiv has been publicly humiliated by her own brother at a moment I think she was really looking forward to.
“She’s not being made CEO at this point, but she has this title of president. She’s a person who uses whatever resources she can to grasp power or leverage. And she’s been undercut in the most sibling bulls**t kind of way.
“What do you do back to that? You can’t do anything except respond in kind.
“It was one of my favourite scenes to shoot, certainly one of my favourite scenes to read when we got the draft – ‘and then she does what?! What’s the Covid protocol for this?!’”
Snook revealed on the day, the production had shot an extended version of the scene in which Shiv kicks the empty stereo boxes and destroys the room before spitting in Kendall’s book.
But ultimately the filmmakers chose to only quickly pan over to the stereo box, making Shiv’s spitting the primary focus.
For Snook, that scene highlights the way Succession depicts these extremely rich characters as flawed and vulnerable.
“We don’t often see wealthy people dealing with human mess, dirt and filth, which is also why it’s great to see Roman masturbating on a window and then wiping it off. It’s so human and sad.
“It’s why it’s fun to see Shiv, who’s otherwise coiffed and turtlenecked with her blazers, spitting and there’s something base about it.”
Snook, who earnt an Emmy nomination for her performance in Succession, goes into depth about her most famous character, what it’s like behind the scenes on TV’s most revered current series, and the instances in which she still experiences stage fright, in a Q&A session for AACTA Screenfest, which is available for everyone to stream.
Screenfest is a virtual festival presented by Australia’s leading not-for-profit organisation championing screen culture. Russell Crowe is the current AACTA president.
This year is the second year in which Screenfest has run, and will also feature sessions with The White Lotus’ Murray Bartlett and a behind-the-scenes exploration of Dune with cinematographer Greig Fraser.
AACTA Screenfest starts today and is free to register and stream.
Succession is available on Foxtel On Demand with new episodes on Mondays
