SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME”.
With “Spider-Man: No Way Home” now in releae, the franchise’s stewards including series producer Amy Pascal and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige have openly discussed the future for the web-slinger in the wake of the ‘Home’ trilogy capper.
The film’s ending effectively resets the board, meaning that the franchise could go in a number of directions from this point on – even as it suggests a more classic interpretation of the character is on the way.
In a conversation with the The New York Times, the pair addressed previous comments made by Pascal about leading man Tom Holland starring in another trilogy of “Spider-Man” films. Pascal says:
“We’re producers, so we always believe everything will work out. I love working with Kevin. We have a great partnership, along with Tom Rothman, who runs Sony and has been instrumental, a great leader with great ideas. I hope it lasts forever.”
Feige went a bit further, confirming active development is already underway on the next film:
“Amy and I and Disney and Sony are talking about – yes, we’re actively beginning to develop where the story heads next, which I only say outright because I don’t want fans to go through any separation trauma like what happened after ‘Far From Home’ [the Disney-Sony financial dispute]. That will not be occurring this time.”
‘No Way Home’ of course is now famous for its raft of on-screen talent from previous films, a movie so jam-packed with big names and ambition it’s near impossible to top in terms of scale.
Pascal says she isn’t concerned with ‘outdoing’ the recent film in terms of scope – but does hope to best it in other ways:
“You can’t think about topping yourself in terms of spectacle. Otherwise, movies just get larger and larger for no reason, and it’s not a good result. But we do want to always try and top ourselves in terms of quality and emotion.
Kevin and I never want to lose sight of one thing: Peter Parker. That he’s a normal kid. That he is orphaned over and over again. That he’s a teenager, so everything in his life is at a heightened pitch and everything matters more than anything. That he’s fueled by goodness and guilt. That he’s striving for a greater cause, and he’s vilified by the press.”
That comment would suggest the plan is to stick with Peter Parker, and Tom Holland’s version of him, for now as opposed to shifting towards Miles Morales or another version of the character.
“Spider-Man: No Way Home” is now out in cinemas worldwide.
