The sad state of Meghan and Harry’s relationship with the royal family has been laid bare on Archie’s birthday.
The toddler celebrates his second birthday today in the US, where he has been living with his parents for most of his life, spending very little time with his royal relatives in the UK.
And this became evidently clear in the royal family’s post marking the milestone on its official Instagram account.
While a child’s birthday is usually an opportunity to show off a new photo, the only snap showed off to the 10 million royal fans was the picture used to announce his birth in 2019.
“Wishing Archie Mountbatten-Windsor a very happy 2nd birthday today,” the accompanying caption read alongside a picture of Harry and Meghan with the newborn.
The dated image is in stark contrast to the pictures used to announce the birthdays of Prince William and Kate’s children.
Just four days ago, royal watchers were treated to a candid image of Princess Charlotte on her sixth birthday, taken by her mum.
Meanwhile, the Cambridges have kept fans happy with a sweet video of the whole family enjoying the outdoors together to mark the couple’s 10th wedding anniversary.
The contrast hasn’t gone unnoticed to followers of the official royal family Instagram account, with many pointing out the awkwardness in light of the obvious unrest between them and the Sussexes.
“No updated pics to use,” pointed out one fan.
“Well this is awkward,” added another.
“I imagine them using this picture on his 18th bday,” joked another fan.
Since closing their Instagram account upon leaving the UK, Harry and Meghan have drip fed images of their family life through friends.
Pregnant Meghan, who is due to give birth sometime in the northern hemisphere’s summertime, showed off her baby bump with Archie and Harry in an intimate snap shared through photographer Misan Harriman last year.
The couple, who have long spoken of their wish for privacy since leaving the UK, have yet to share their own picture to mark their son’s second birthday.
