With RuPaul's Drag Race Down Under making its iconic launch with Australian and New Zealand queens, us Aussies have had our eyes peeled to the screens to see some of our favourite drag performers enter the Werk Room.

Sadly, however, the experience was short-lived for Jojo Zaho, who was the first queen to be eliminated from the show after a spectacular effort on the runway, showcasing a dazzling 'Always Was, Always Will Be' Aboriginal hometown gown.
9Entertainment spoke to Jojo about her time on the show.
What was it like to be invited on to RuPaul's Drag Race?
We were in talks for about two months, but nobody had actually mentioned the words 'Drag Race'... and then they confirmed it, and I thought, 'Wow, OK... I guess we're doing this now!'
What was it like to work with other Aussie and Kiwi queens on the show?
I actually work at the Broken Hill festival every year, so I've worked with Art Simone there before, and I've worked with Kita Mean and Anita Wiglet there as well, and Etcetera Etcetera is joining us there this year as well, so I definitely felt at home with a lot of queens, and we all get along great.
For me it was one of things where I realised, 'Oh OK, maybe you're not that bad at drag!' I was on the same stage and the same level as all these other queens.

I think RuPaul's Drag Race is the great equaliser because no matter how big or how small you are, you're there! So to be put at the same level on Drag Race with a lot of the queens that I look up to is a beautiful and serene feeling.
What was it like meeting Drag Race icons RuPaul and Michelle Visage?
I first saw RuPaul in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar [a popular '90s film about the drag scene] where she was suspended from the ceiling in a confederate flag dress, and her name was Rachel Tension, with the play on words being 'racial tension', so to think the fact that RuPaul was in front of me... it was just crazy.
I remember thinking to myself, I thought, 'Technically — I might get slapped if I did it — but technically, I could just walk up to her and touch her.'

You were very clear about the importance of representing Aboriginal culture. What did that message mean to you?
I thought that [the Always Was Always Will Be] message would be lost on an international audience, but for me it was about being up there representing Australia and Indigenous culture.
So that message was very much for Australia. But I hope the international audience will see this and then google what the hell that means. Hopefully it sparks the conversation internationally as well, that's the plan.
What advice do you have for Aboriginal people wanting to get break into the drag scene?
Just stick true to who you are. I don't make my Indigenous culture the only thing about my drag, but I definitely try to incorporate it. So my message would be to feel free to incorporate it as much as you can, but you don't have to.

My inboxes are open, any questions you want, I'll tell you anything I can. When I first started drag, I didn't know any Indigenous queens, and now we have quite a large Indigenous drag community, and we're all very supportive, so reach out to Indigenous queens, because one of the things that are quite tricky — and I'm not blaming the drag scene for this — but the drag scene in Australia is very white.
One of the things I find when I'm looking up makeup tutorials for examples is it's quite hard to find if you've got darker skin tones. Let's say, I can't get away with silver eye shadow or blues too much because it makes me look ashy.
To all the up and coming Koori queens out there, inbox me!
What was it like performing the Lip Sync For Your Life?
It was so nerve wracking, because there are only three people up there, so you're performing to these three people, and you can see when they're looking at you, but also when they're glancing at the other performer as well.

So there are definitely those moments of when I'm thinking, 'Oh my God I need to get their attention back, how do I get them to look at me, look at me!' It was mind-blowing, but at the same time, I was there to have fun and showcase what I was there to showcase.
How did it feel to be the first queen eliminated from the show?
My experience was definitely positive. I had such a great experience, and even though it was short-lived, I hold no ill will towards the judges, no ill will towards the other queens or Elektra, so for me it is what it is. I looked at it as another launching pad for where drag will take me next, or where my career will take me next.
