Tracy Chapman makes surprise TV return on Late Night With Seth Meyers - NEWS.com.au

She was responsible for a handful of the most enduring hits of the 80s and 90s, but music legend Tracy Chapman is rarely seen or heard from nowadays.

The folk-pop singer, who burst onto the scene in the late 80s with self-penned hits like Fast Car, Baby Can I Hold You and later the 1995 smash Give Me One Reason, hasn’t released an album since 2008.

It’s been five long years since her last TV performance, but it seems the biggest US election of a lifetime was enough to coax her out of hiding: Chapman grabbed her guitar and delivered an acoustic performance for Late Night With Seth Meyers the night before Americans took to the polls.

At 56, she barely seems to have aged, her voice still clear as ever. Her song of choice? Talkin’ ‘bout a Revolution, the 1988 single that served as the opening track of her smash hit self-titled debut album. Sample lyric:

“Don’t you know

They’re talkin’ ‘bout a revolution

It sounds like a whisper

Poor people gonna rise up

That same year, Chapman opened up about why she’s so seldom seen in public nowadays in a rare interview to promote a greatest hits compilation.

“Being in the public eye and under the glare of the spotlight was, and it still is, to some extent, uncomfortable for me, but there are some ways by which everything that has happened in my life has prepared me for this career. But I am a bit shy,” she told the Irish Times.

“I have this personality that is a bit on the reserved side, and which had never really sought out the limelight. That has made me perhaps not the ideal person for this job.”
