A council has shot down speculation a Disneyland could soon be constructed in Australia.
Werribee, situated 30 minutes west of Melbourne’s CBD, was rumoured to become the location of the first Down Under Disney theme park but a council spokesman has now poured cold water on those rumours.
“Wyndham City has not been approached by any organisation in relation to plans for a Disney-style park in our municipality,” the spokesman told the Herald Sun.
The Victorian city is home to the Werribee Open Range Zoo and Werribee Mansion, with many saying Disneyland would be a great new addition to the tourist hotspot.
Rumours first began that a Disneyland theme park could be on the cards for Australia after the Walt Disney Company revealed in September it was planning to expand internationally.
The company plans to double its capital expenditure in the next decade to $60 billion and it’s understood this will include three new international theme parks.
Victorian Tourism Industry Council chief Felicia Mariani said major attractions like Disneyland are “critical” to driving tourists to Victoria, however, denied rumours Werribee was a possible location for the park.
“Whether it is Disney or some other type of major attraction, the reality is those sort of new attractions are really critical to driving visitation into Victoria, and in particular having something that sits in the greater Melbourne region, as opposed to Melbourne CBD,” she said.
