Baker Boy portrait by Matt Adnate wins packing room prize as Archibald finalists revealed - 9News

A portrait of Indigenous rapper Baker Boy painted by Victorian street artist Matt Adnate has won the famed packing room prize in this year's Archibald prize.

The prize, valued at $3000, is decided upon by the Art Gallery of NSW staff who unpack and hang the Archibald entries.

Adnate said he met Baker Boy - real name Danzal Baker - over a decade ago and was awed by his talent as a dancer, performer and artist.

The pair previously collaborated on Baker's Aria award-winning album Gela in 2021 with Adnate creating the cover art.

"With this portrait, I aimed to encapsulate the journey of my dear friend Baker Boy from his roots as a young Indigenous performer from Arnhem Land to the music icon he has become today," Adnate said in a statement.

"Our connection has spanned over a decade, with me painting him on multiple murals and canvases, and him performing at my events."

Blue Wiggle Anthony Field also made an appearance in this year's line-up as a banana-gun-toting cowboy, painted by landscape and portrait artist Camellia Morris.
