Country music star Toby Keith has died aged 62 after a three-year battle with stomach cancer.
A message was posted on his social media platforms on Tuesday informing fans of his passing. Keith had previously announced that he’d been diagnosed with cancer in June of 2022.
“Toby Keith passed peacefully last night on February 5th, surrounded by his family. He fought his fight with grace and courage. Please respect the privacy of his family at this time,” the message read.
Keith is survived by his wife Tricia Lucas, whom he married in 1984, and their three children Shelley, Krystal and Stelen. He also has four grandchildren.
Lucas has previously described her husband as “one of those larger than life guys”, saying he was “full of confidence” from the moment she met him in a bar. Keith and Lucas were just 20 and 19, resepectively, at the time.
Earlier this month he spoke publicly about his cancer battle, adding that he’d come to terms with his disease.
“I was going through all the chemo, radiation, surgery, and I got to the point where I was comfortable with whatever happened. I had my brain wrapped around it, and I was in a good spot either way,” Keith told 9News.
He described the experience of fighting cancer as a “rollercoaster”.
“It’s like, you just sit here and wait on it to go away, and it may never go away,” he said.
But his wife helped ease the pain of the fight.
“Oh, she’s been a trooper. She’s the best nurse,” Keith said of Lucas.
“The first time we went to Houston, to the hospital, she stepped right in and she just took control and said, ‘We got this. Let’s go.’
“So she’s like, ‘We’re going to get this and don’t worry about it.’”
Famous names have been paying tribute to Keith online.
“God bless you and your family. Hard to imagine an America without Toby Keith in it,” said fellow country musician Randy Houser.
Golfer John Daly said his heart was “truly broken” by the news, describing Keith as “one of my best friends”.
Darren Carter, a stand-up comedian, thanked Keith for his “many years of music” and “the love you gave us”.
Keith continued to practise his craft, and recently played live at the People’s Choice Awards in 2023, to rave reviews.
At that event he was also given the coveted Country Icon Award.
His legendary career ends with him having sold more than 40 million records.
