Aussie TV veteran Dave Hughes has been rushed to hospital following a surfing accident on New Year’s Eve.
Hughes, aka Hughesy, revealed he dislocated his shoulder while enjoying a day out on the Gold Coast on Sunday, resulting in nerve damage and the “worst pain” of his life.
The 53-year-old comedian and TV presenter said the pain was so severe lifeguards administered Penthrox, an emergency pain killer commonly known as the green whistle.
“Happy New Year. Had my least sober NYE in 30+ years,” Hughes shared on Instagram.
“Green whistle came after two hours of worst pain of my life, plus morphine and the rest of them.
“Shoulder dislocation while surfing. 9 out of 10 level nerve damage.
“Shout out to wife, Surfers Paradise SLSC, and Gold Coast medical professionals for their much needed help!
“Will be in a sling for a while, not sure when my next right-handed high five will be.”
Alongside the update, Hughes also shared a series of dramatic images taken after the injury.
They included photos of him slumped over in a beach buggy driven by a lifesaver, lying back with his arm in a sling and bent over the green whistle while he clutched a pillow.
The post was flooded by Hughes’ famous friends wishing him well, including Bachelor host Osher Günsberg, who offered to narrate the incident for one of his other iconic TV gigs.
“Oh no Dave! That’s horrible. If you need surgery (and I hope you don’t) I could narrate it for you with my Bondi Rescue voice if you like?” Günsberg wrote.
“Oh god no! That’s horrendous. There’s goes your long held ambitions to be the national chicken dance champion,” added comedian Nikki Osborne.
“Oh love. How awful. I hope you’re recovering okay. Legend wife for getting pics,” joked reality star Yvie Jones.
Comedian Anthony Lehmann, aka Lehmo, asked a key question: “Is there footage of you falling off the board?”
Hughes has long been candid about his abstinence from drugs and alcohol, having been sober since he was 21.

But he’s previously said his archetypal rugged look often makes people believe he’s battling a massive hangover.
“I was at the Qantas Club one morning and — I don’t drink at all by the way — I handed my frequent flyer card over to the woman behind the counter and she said ‘you must have had a rough night?” he recounted at an event in 2022.
“I’d had nine hours sleep. I haven’t had a drink since 1992.”
