Star seen in Bondi after being ‘cancelled’ - news.com.au

Controversial comedian Matt Rife, who declared he doesn’t “pander” his career to women, has been spotted looking like a Home and Away star on Bondi Beach.

Rife, 28, kept it casual, shirtless, and wearing a cap, likely to obscure his famous face as he roamed one of Sydney’s most famous beaches.

The shirtless moment allowed him to display some tattoos, and he was giving big Pete Davidson vibes. You know, a tall white man who makes jokes and loves inking himself up like a gang member without a sensible budget.

Rife is currently touring his stand-up show Problemattic. Yes, the extra ‘t’ is so the title can double as a reference to his own name.

The comedian has been trotting all over the place and has been performing his show everywhere from Perth to Sydney.

Rife’s appearance in Australia comes after he went viral for making a domestic violence joke during his Netflix comedy special.

To open his stand-up show, Natural Selection, which Rife previously said is aimed at men, he decided to try out a domestic violence joke.

He told a story about being served by a waitress in Baltimore with a black eye. The 28-year-old said he thought it was “obvious” what had happened to her, but he was surprised, considering her battered state, that she was still working.

“But we couldn’t get over, like, this is the face of the company? This is who you have greeting people?” he said.

Rife said that he and his mate felt terrible for her – and then came the punchlines at her expense.

“And my boy, who I was with, was like, ‘Yeah, I feel bad for her, man; I feel like they should put her in the kitchen or something where nobody has to see her face.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, but I feel like if she could cook, she wouldn’t have that black eye.”

The comedian then explained he was testing the waters with that joke to see if the audience would be “fun”.

“I figured we start the show with domestic violence; the rest of the show should be pretty smooth sailing,” he said.

More Coverage

There was a mass backlash to Rife’s joke, particularly because Rife essentially got his big break by amassing a huge female fan base online who enjoyed his comedy and also his boy-band-worthy looks.

One woman wrote that she found it “sickening” and another said it was “appalling”, but there were also people defending Rife’s joke.

One wrote that the comedian got hate because his audience couldn’t take a “joke,” and another said it was just a “dark joke” that plenty of comics routinely get away with.
