Christopher Reeve's Family Comment On The Flash's Controversial Superman Cameo - Screen Rant

Summary

  • In a new documentary, Christopher Reeve's children discuss his CGI cameo in The Flash movie from 2023.
  • Will, Matthew, and Alexandra Reeve reveal they had not seen The Flash and were not involved in approving their dad's cameo.
  • The documentary sheds light on the actor's posthumous appearance in the DCEU film.

Nearly a year after The Flash movie was released in theaters, Christopher Reeve's children have spoken out about the late actor's cameo in the DCEU film. What was meant to be a huge installment for Warner Bros. Discovery's DCEU instead became one of their biggest issues, as The Flash movie became a commercial flop in 2023. While other films in the DCEU movie timeline prior to and after The Flash's release struggled too, the Scarlet Speedster stood out more, especially given how long it had been in development.

One of the most controversial elements of The Flash movie was that of its cameos, which included Reeve's Superman through the usage of CGI. Reeves' children - Will, Matthew, and Alexandra Reeve - featured in the new documentary, Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story (via Variety), which also made reference to their late father's CGI cameo in The Flash movie back in 2023. The Reeve family members stated that they had not seen The Flash, and were not even involved with the cameo being signed off.

The Flash movie is finally here after a long, tumultuous production, and its ending presents a complicated series of scenes and unanswered questions.

Why So Many Of The Flash Movie Cameos Were Controversial

One of the core issues with the cameos in The Flash movie was the visual effects that were used for their respective appearances - as this raised the moral question of whether posthumous actors would want their likenesses recreated for this purpose, especially when many of the cameos had an uncanny aspect to them. This is perhaps best exemplified by the Golden Age Flash cameo, whose presence was ambiguous enough that many initially believed it was Teddy Sears from The Flash TV show, despite the role in fact having been played by one of the movie's editors.

What made it even worse with The Flash's DC multiverse cameos was the fact that these were chosen instead of having Grant Gustin's The Flash from the Arrowverse show up in some capacity. Gustin, who confirmed that he was never even contacted to appear in The Flash movie, would have been far more organic to have in the story, rather than questionable CGI recreations.

The Flash movie will forever remain one of the biggest enigmas in the superhero genre, as the DCEU movie should have been able to be what Spider-Man: No Way Home was for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Instead, given the massive poor reception for The Flash film, time will tell when the Scarlet Speedster will be back on the big screen anytime soon. But for now, the world can catch The Flash movie on Blu-Ray/DVD or stream it on Max.
