Americans were shocked to hear a “racist” term used willy-nilly on the trashy Australian dating experiment Married at First Sight.
A Reddit user said they were stunned by often hearing the term “Chinese whispers” on the drama series.
Chinese whispers is a game, often played by children, that sees participants pass a phrase or message through a chain of several people to see if the original message is retained at the end of the group.
Usually, whatever is said often changes as it is passed through each person despite the aim of the game to ensure the final version matches the original.
The term Chinese whispers is often used metaphorically to describe this phenomenon.
“I’m from the US, and we keep hearing this phrase being used in S6,” the Reddit post reads.
“To me, that’s a pretty nasty racial slur. Is this phrase common in Australia?
“I was pretty shocked.”
Other users responded to add some context to its use in Australia.
“It’s super common in Australia and NZ. It’s even used casually in the workplace,” one said.
“Yes, in the UK, we used to play ‘Chinese whispers’ as a game (in the 90s). However, I’ve heard people say this is problematic over the years. So I would call it the Telephone Game now,” another said.
Etymology reveals the term may have grown out of the 1800s gold rushes in Australia and New Zealand when many Chinese migrated to the regions.
The term is believed to come from a racist idea that Chinese people spoke in a way that was deliberately unintelligible to English-speaking settlers.
People in the United States have steered clear of using the term in favour of using the ‘telephone game’ instead.
