Jock Zonfrillo: Masterchef star laid to rest in small funeral in Sydney - PerthNow

Celebrity chef Jock Zonfrillo is being laid to rest in a private funeral in Sydney.

Family and friends have flown in from around the world to farewell the Glasgow-born Masterchef judge who died suddenly on April 30, aged 46.

Zonfrillo’s wife Lauren Fried led mourners into a small chapel on Saturday morning, according to The Daily Telegraph.

Ms Fried was in Rome with their two children Alfie, 5, and Isla, 2, when she received the devastating news of his sudden passing, having made the long heartbreaking journey home to lay her husband to rest. Zonfrillo also had two adult children, Ava and Sophie.

Mourners at the funeral include Zonfrillo’s fellow Masterchef judge and close friend Andy Allen and his pregnant wife Alex Davey and former Masterchef judge George Colombaris.

A number of other celebrity chefs also attended, including Manu Fiedel, Shannon Bennett and Colin Fassnidge. Nigella Lawson, and Gary Mehigan are also believed to be there.

His coffin was covered in the royal Banner of Scotland and decorated in white roses and orchids.

The award-winning restauranteur’s death was announced just hours before the premiere of the latest season of Masterchef Australia was set to air.

Zonfrillo had returned to Melbourne from Rome in the days before to help promote the series. His body was found in a hotel room on Lygon Street.

While his death is not being treated as suspicious, what caused his death may not be known for some time.

Zonfrillo had moved with his young family to Rome just weeks before his death in what was to set to be an exciting new chapter.

In the hours after his sudden passing, Zonfrillo’s family issued an emotional statement saying their hearts were “completely shattered” and they were at a loss as to how they would move through life without him.

Zonfrillo moved to Australia in 2000 after forging a career in kitchens under high-profile chefs including Gordon Ramsay.

His South Australian restaurant Orana was named restaurant of the year by Gourmet Traveller magazine in 2017 and he was announced as a judge for the revamped version of Masterchef in 2019.
