Prince Harry’s ghostwriter reveals ‘unnecessary’ detail omitted from memoir - Sky News Australia

J.R Moehringer, the ghostwriter who helped pen Prince Harry's memoir Spare, has recalled a moment where he thought "it could all end right here" as they disputed the inclusion of a specific detail in the book.

In a feature published by The New Yorker, Moehringer talked about how he would communicate frequently with the Duke of Sussex while collaborating on his memoir.

The 58-year-old writer said he engaged in an argument with Prince Harry that left him "exasperated" over a comeback he launched at his 'captors' in a terrorist simulation he took part in as a military exercise.

"I was exasperated with Prince Harry. My head was pounding, my jaw was clenched, and I was starting to raise my voice," he said.

"And yet some part of me was still able to step outside the situation and think, This is so weird. I'm shouting at Prince Harry.

"Then, as Harry started going back at me, as his cheeks flushed and his eyes narrowed, a more pressing thought occurred: Whoa, it could all end right here."

In the simulation after his 'captors' threw him against a wall, choked him and hurled insults at him including a dig at Princess Diana, Harry replied with a comeback which was ultimately left out of the book.

Prince Harry was "insisting" on the comeback to be included in the book because "all his life, people had belittled his intellectual capabilities, and this flash of cleverness proved that, even after being kicked and punched and deprived of sleep and food, he had his wits about him."

"Harry always wanted to end this scene with a thing he said to his captors, a comeback that struck me as unnecessary, and somewhat inane," Moehringer said.

"Good for Harry that he had the nerve, but ending with what he said would dilute the scene's meaning: that even at the most bizarre and peripheral moments of his life, his central tragedy intrudes.

"For months, I'd been crossing out the comeback, and for months Harry had been pleading for it to go back in.

"Now he wasn't pleading, he was insisting, and it was 2 a.m., and I was starting to lose it. I said, dude, we've been over this."

Moehringer said it wasn't the first time he engaged in an argument with Harry although he declared this occasion "felt different" as Harry was "no longer saying anything, he was just glaring into the camera."

Harry’s book Spare is a 'must-read'

He revealed once travel restrictions eased he stayed in a guesthouse at Harry and Meghan's California ranch where the Duchess would often bring trays of food and sweets.

The writer said he and Harry bonded over the loss of their mothers and their frustration with the British press amid the release of Spare.

Spare was released in January to mixed reviews with explosive details including allegations of a disagreement between Meghan and Kate Middleton, a fight with brother Prince William and Harry's drug-taking.

Before he collaborated with Prince Harry, J.R Moehringer was also the ghostwriter for tennis star Andre Agassi and American billionaire Phil Knight.
