Meghan Markle’s friend Omid Scobie has weighed in on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's alleged “near catastrophic” car chase with "highly aggressive paparazzi" through New York City on Tuesday night, as a source revealed why Buckingham Palace hasn't publicly commented on the incident.
The Duchess of Sussex's unofficial spokesperson told ABC News he was “shocked” that “neither Harry nor Meghan have heard from any members of the royal family” amid the latest media furore.
“This is a story that is almost out of Princess Diana’s book,” Mr Scobie told reporter Kayna Whitworth.
“King Charles and Prince William hearing this story would have no doubt stirred some kind of emotional response.
“So I was really shocked to hear from sources that neither Harry nor Meghan have heard from any members of the royal family."
Diana, the then Princess of Wales and her partner Dodi Fayed were killed in a horror car crash in Paris in August 1997 after being pursued by paparazzi.
A source has told Entertainment Tonight that Buckingham Palace won't be issuing a statement about the alleged car chase because it "generally does not comment" on the Sussexes' "activities."
“Since Harry and Meghan have stepped back from royal duties, the palace generally does not comment on their activities,” the royal insider told the outlet.
A spokesperson for the Sussexes said they were hounded relentlessly by photographers for "over two hours" after leaving the Women of Vision Awards in Midtown Manhattan at about 10pm on Tuesday.
“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and [Markle’s mother] Ms. Ragland were involved in a near catastrophic car chase at the hands of a ring of highly aggressive paparazzi,” the spokesperson told the US cable news network.
“This relentless pursuit, lasting over two hours, resulted in multiple near collisions involving other drivers on the road, pedestrians and two NYPD officers.”
The couple have since demanded a photo agency “immediately” handover the footage captured by paparazzi of the chase.
Their legal team claimed the footage was essential to improving the California-based couple’s security, TMZ reported.
“We hereby demand that Backgrid (photo agency) immediately provide us with copies of all photos, videos, and/or films taken last night by the freelance photographers after the couple left their event and over the next several hours,” the letter read, according to the outlet.
But Backgrid's lawyers fired back, denying Harry and Meghan's request to provide the recording.
“In America, as I’m sure you know, property belongs to the owner of it: Third parties cannot just demand it be given to them, as perhaps Kings can do,” the celebrity photo agency's legal team responded, according to reports.
“Perhaps you should sit down with your client and advise them that his English rules of royal prerogative to demand that the citizenry hand over their property to the Crown were rejected by this country long ago. We stand by our founding fathers.”
