Footage of celebrity cook Jock Zonfrillo in the new season of MasterChef Australia was mistakenly uploaded online after Channel 10 promised to delay the show’s release following his shock death.
The first 17 minutes of the popular cooking show was available to stream on 10 Play on Tuesday afternoon.
An eager and upbeat Zonfrillo wearing a baby blue suit was seen welcoming the season’s new contestants.
The 46-year-old celebrity chef’s body was found in a Melbourne hotel room about 2am on Monday — several hours before MasterChef was due to go to air that night.
In the clip, which has since been taken down, the Scotsman spoke about 2021 contestant Brent Draper who called it quits early on in the season.
Draper left the show to look after his mental health, a decision that Zonfrillo praised at the time, telling the struggling chef how “proud” he was of him.
Draper has returned for the 2023 season and Zonfrillo introduced him as the surprise final contestant.
“This belongs to you, I believe you left it here,” Zonfrillo said to Draper as he handed him an apron and laughed.
“First thing for you, let’s get it out of the way, how are you feeling?” Zonfrillo then asked him, before Draper explained that he was back and ready to win.
The judges, including Melissa Leong and Andy Allen, next introduced the season’s special guest, celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, which the contestants were overjoyed about.
Zonfrillo quizzed the fellow chef about his home cooking.
“From a very early age, you’ve really dedicated your life to the producer, to the produce, but also championing home cooking, which is what MasterChef Australia is all about. What does home cooking mean to you now, 25 years on?” Zonfrillo said.
Oliver said that food was “really powerful” and could take people back to our “nonnas cooking for us” as children.
The contestants were then tasked with a challenge to cook a dish that they normally make at home if they want to impress their guests.
MasterChef’s future will ultimately be decided by Zonfrillo’s wife Lauren, Channel 10 sources told Daily Mail Australia, with the show not airing until at least May 8.
This comes as Zonfrillo’s fellow judges Leong and Allen paid tribute to their friend on social media.
Leong wrote on Instagram that the chef’s death “feels too raw to process still” and he was meant to be the “bulletproof one who outlived us all”.
“I suspect it will (feel raw) for some time,” she wrote.
“My heart goes out to your family, who were and are your life.
“A wee dram for you today, and always.”
Allen also wrote on Instagram that when he met Zonfrillo five years ago, he “knew our lives were about to change forever”.
“What I didn’t realise is how close Alex and I would become outside of the kitchen with you, Lauren and your kids,” he said.
“Sure, you’ve taught me so much about food, but it’s the lessons I learnt about what it means to be a great father, husband and friend that I’ll take away from our time together and will last forever.”
The judges’ posts join a long list of other heartbreaking tributes published on online after Zonfrillo’s death rocked the TV and showbiz worlds.
