The Golden Globes has copped two devastating blows: It will not be aired by decades-long broadcast partner NBC in 2022, and Tom Cruise has returned his awards, all due to criticism over the body behind the event.
Key points:
- NBC said the pause is only for a year, providing concerns are addressed
- An investigation revealed issues with diversity and signs of corruption within the body
- Hollywood heavyweights have banded together to demand reform
The body which hands out the awards, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), has been under sustained criticism over its lack of diversity and for accepting gifts from prospective nominees.
The decision came despite the announcement a plan had been approved last week by the HFPA to recruit more black members and make other changes over the next year.
“We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform,” NBC said in a statement.
"As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organisation executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”
What did the HFPA do so wrong?
The Golden Globes faced immense scrutiny this year following an investigation by the Los Angeles Times that revealed there were no black people among the 87-member group of foreign entertainment journalists who make up the HFPA.
The Los Angeles Times also raised long-standing ethical questions over the close relationships between the HFPA and movie studios, which may influence the choice of Golden Globe nominees and winners.
The controversy overshadowed the Golden Globes ceremony in February, one of the major Hollywood award shows leading up to the Oscars in April.
Last week, the HFPA board wrote to its members suggesting several steps to diversify its roster, including hiring a chief diversity officer, putting emphasis on recruiting black journalists and widening the pool of potential applicants.
Celebrities throw their weight against the HFPA
Tom Cruise joined a revolt led by streaming platforms and studios, returning the three Golden Globe statuettes he won for his roles in Jerry Maguire, Magnolia and Born on the Fourth of July.
The LA Times investigation spurred an infographic to be widely shared by celebrities on social media.
Notable stars such as Kerry Washington, Sterling K. Brown, Amy Schumer, America Ferrera, Dakota Johnson, Laura Dern, and many more reposted the image, the full text of which has been included at the end of this article.
Greys Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo posted an open letter calling for change to her Instagram account, Scarlett Johansson spoke out about sexist comments directed at her from the organisation and pioneering filmmaker Ava DuVernay tweeted about the knowledge of problems within the HFPA going back years.

In March, more than 100 public relations firms sent a letter to the HFPA, informing it they had withdrawn all of their celebrity clients until it made “profound and lasting change” to correct what it described as the HFPA’s “longstanding exclusionary ethos … discriminatory behavior [and] ethical impropriety”.
Studios such as WarnerMedia, Netflix, Amazon and HBO also announced they are all cutting ties with the body until reform is implemented.
