Tuesday night’s episode of The Project will delve into the #MeToo movement in the Australian music industry.
Lisa Wilkinson sits down with musician Jaguar Jonze who speaks candidly about her experience as a female recording artist and the industry’s dark side.
In a clip shared exclusively with news.com.au, Jonze reveals the events that changed her life.
“They straight away just went for it … grabbing me, being very sexual towards me. The language changed. The behaviour changed, and I said, ‘Hey, your colleague is making me feel extremely uncomfortable I don’t know what to do,’ to which he replied to me, ‘Oh that’s what he’s like. It’s normal behaviour when he’s intoxicated. Don’t worry about it’.
“But then, he himself, when I confided in him, began to do the exact same thing.
“I verbally, constantly was saying, ‘No, no, no. I do not want to do this.’”
It is unclear who Jonze is referring to as no names are mentioned in the promotional clip, however it may be revealed during the full interview on tonight’s episode.
It is one of many stories that have come from artists in the Australian music industry that have come to light in recent months.
An Instagram account called Beneath The Glass Ceiling has been sharing anonymous stories of harassment and abuse within the industry since November 2020.
They have shared numerous accounts of similar allegations to Jaguar Jonze’s.
“Beneath the Glass Ceiling (BTGC) is run by people who wish to give a voice to those who have been silenced by the injustices that exist within the Australian music industry,” the mission statement says. “This includes sexual assault and harassment, abuse of power, bullying, systemic inequality, and more. The stories and experiences shared here are not our own: our aim is to provide a safe space for people to share their experiences, connect them with valuable resources for recovery, and generate awareness of the broader issues prevalent within the music industry.”
Numerous posts referred to a “group of boys” who were “grooming” a 14-year-old girl.
Another alleged that a group of “young girls” who were “highly intoxicated” were brought back to a studio to be used for sex.
Jaguar Jonze account can be seen on The Project which airs at 6:30pm on Channel 10.
