The British royal family are one of the richest monarchies in the world, with the family being estimated to be worth $123 billion dollars in 2020.

Although Princess Diana wasn't born into royalty, she came from a very prestigious background, growing up as Lady Diana Spencer in a wealthy British family and Diana receiving a family inheritance when she turned 18.

Diana's family was considered among the elite in the UK, with her father becoming the eighth Earl Spencer in 1975. Her brother Charles, who is the ninth Earl Spencer, is currently worth roughly $100 million USD ($143 million AUD).

Diana had her own source of income, moving to London when she was 18 and working as a nanny and kindergarten teacher, with some speculating that her cost of living would've been relatively low due to her parent's paying her apartment.

The Princess of Wales' worth increased dramatically after marrying Charles in 1981, with most of his money coming from the Duchy of Cornwall, the estate he inherited when he was 21, which he still uses to support his immediate family today.

Diana received a huge settlement when the royal couple divorced in 1996. The New York Times reported that, she received about $22.5 million USD ($31.5 million AUD) in cash, plus was given about $600,000 ($840, 200 AUD) per year for business expenses.

According some reports, Princess Diana was worth around $31.5 million USD ($44 million AUD) when she tragically died in 1997, although other reports suggest she may have been worth as much as $55 million USD ($77 million AUD).

After her death, Diana's possessions were split up, with some being donated to exhibitions with the proceeds going to charity, and Will and Harry having control of a large portion of their mother's estate and personal possessions at the moment.

Both the Prince's received their inheritance from their mother on their 30th birthdays.
