Justin Townes Earle, the beloved Nashville singer and songwriter who released several albums that melded country, Americana and folk, has died aged 38.
Earle's death was announced on his official social media channels.
"It is with tremendous sadness that we inform you of the passing of our son, husband, father and friend Justin," a post on his Facebook page read.
"So many of you have relied on his music and lyrics over the years and we hope that his music will continue to guide you on your journeys."
No cause of death was given.
Earle, who brought an alternative streak to traditional songwriting, in a similar way to contemporaries like Wilco and Ryan Adams, spoke and wrote at length about his battles with addiction and spent time in rehab.
On his website, he talks about his getting sober around the release of his 2014 album, Single Mothers.
"One day I just realized it's not cool to die young, and it's even less cool to die after 30," he said.
Earle was the son of country singer-songwriter Steve Earle, and was named for the songwriter Townes Van Sandt.
More to come.
