Kath & Kim comedian Magda Szubanski accuses chef Pete Evans of fat shaming - NEWS.com.au

Comedian Magda Szubanski has accused controversial celebrity chef and coronavirus sceptic Pete Evans of fat shaming on social media.

The social media spat lit up on Tuesday morning after Evans took to his Facebook page to slam the state government’s decision to use “well known celebrities” in an advertising campaign urging Victorians to follow coronavirus health orders.

Szubanski revived her iconic Kath & Kim character Sharon Strzelecki in one of the ads aired on television to urge people “the sooner we obey the rules, the sooner this will all be over and we can get back to the stuff that really matters”.

Evans took offence to the ads and claimed the government was “brainwashing” children and families on his Facebook page, which he has used to peddle conspiracy theories during the pandemic.

Evans was then accused of fat shaming Szubanski after derogatory comments by other users were posted on his page.

That prompted a strong response from many Twitter users, including Szubanski herself, who called out Evans on her profile.

“#fatshaming me & assertion that fat people have no place in discussion about public health not only insults me but also all the fat nurses, doctors, ambos etc who give so much,” she wrote.

“Frankly I am sick to … death of skinny people (yes Pete Evans and your followers) assuming they are morally and spiritually superior.

“Wondering just how many fat people Pete Evans has helped lose weight … AND KEEP IT OFF LONG TERM.

“I’m talking 5, 10, 15 years. If he can prove that, then Pete, let’s chat.

“And let me be clear, I was raised on alternative eating. It can be helpful … but obesity is very complex.”

Journalist Wendy Tuohy was one of users who went into bat for Szubanski and called out the “disgusting” comments enabled by Evans’ latest rant.

“A true public health advocate would never allow filthy cyber-bullying to be amplified in this way,” she tweeted.

Evans has promoted a number of discredited coronavirus conspiracy theories on his profile, including the Plandemic: Indoctornation movie that claims it was created by American doctors and the rich and powerful.
