Drew Barrymore has confirmed a bizarre longstanding rumour that her famous grandfather’s corpse was stolen from a morgue for “one last party” following his 1942 death.
The star made the incredible revelation during an appearance on the famed YouTube series Hot Ones, explaining that the body of her grandfather, legendary actor John Barrymore, was stolen by friends and propped up against a poker table.
She went on to reveal that the eerie adventure could well have been the inspiration behind cult comedy Weekend at Bernie’s.

During the enlightening chat, host Sean Evans had asked Drew, 45, to shed light on the rumour, naming Errol Flynn, comedian WC Fields and the poet Sadakichi Hartmann as the culprits.
“They did! And I will say this, I hope my friends do the same for me,” Drew told Evans.
“That is the kind of spirit I can get behind: just prop the old bag up and have a last few rounds.”
She continued: “I think death comes with so much morose sadness, and I understand that, but if it’s okay, just with me, if everyone can be really happy and celebratory and have a party, that would be my preference.”
Drew said the wild night out served as the inspiration for a scene in the Julie Andrews comedy film SOB. She also said she’d heard rumours 1989 cult comedy Weekend at Bernie’s, was also inspired by the fate of her grandfather.
The star and mum-of-two, who made her big-screen debut at the age of five in Ken Russell’s Altered States, and stole hearts at seven as the adorable Gertie in E.T., was born into a family of acting legends, her own father John Drew Barrymore a star in the 50s.

Her grandfather John was a heavy-hitter in classic Hollywood, having appeared in silent film versions of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920), Sherlock Holmes (1922) and The Sea Beast (1926).
He went on to star in Grand Hotel (1932), Twentieth Century (1934) and Midnight (1939) — his stage-trained voice an asset to film in the era.
His career was dotted with scandal, from struggling with alcohol abuse from the age of 14 to being married and divorced four times. He died at 60 years old from cirrhosis of the liver and kidney failure.
His granddaughter, Never Been Kissed star Drew, has opened up about her own troubled days as a child star in the past, having battled a drug addiction that reportedly began when she was just 12 years old.
She famously became emancipated from her parents at the age of 14.
