Bridger Walker family reveals final moments before he saved sister from dog attack - 7NEWS.com.au

The family of a six-year-old Wyoming boy who was mauled by a dog while saving his younger sister has revealed the moments that transpired before the attack.

Bridger Walker stepped in to save his four-year-old sister when the dog began charging at the pair while visiting a friend’s house on July 9.

His parents say their son’s selfless act was “no surprise”.

“Our knowledge of the events is necessarily limited to what we heard from our now four-year-old daughter and from Bridger’s own account of events,” the parents wrote in a statement on Instagram.

“Upon entering the yard, the child with them pointed to one dog and said ‘that is the nice dog,’ and pointed to the other dog in the yard, explaining, ‘this is the mean one’.”

Moments later the ‘mean dog’ charged as his sister and in Bridger’s words, “I stepped to the side, in front of my sister so that the dog wouldn’t get to her. I kept moving, so it couldn’t get past”.

He had just one request for his sister - “run”.

The dog jumped at Bridger and latched onto his cheek, leaving him with 80 stitches.

The moment the animal released its grip, he ran to his sister’s aid, leading her to a “more secure part of the yard where he thought they would be safe”.

Later, his father asked Bridger why he shielded his sister, he said: “If someone had to die, I thought it should be me”.

Surprising message

The owner then secured the dog and ran to Bridger’s aid, applying pressure to his wound, before emergency services arrived.

Despite the ordeal, his parents say they are “forever and sincerely grateful for the love and care” the dog’s owners provided.

“It may sound strange, but as the families sat waiting for EMT’s to stabilise Bridger, my wife and I felt a strong spirit of love for all involved.”

The animal control officer later confirmed to the family that the dog - a one-year-old German Shepard mix rescue - had been euthanised.

The family said the response to Bridger’s act had been “surprising and humbling” and encouraged those who were touched by their story to donate to two organisations - Mission 22 and Operation Underground Railroad.
