Aussie actor dishes on Euphoria sex scenes - news.com.au

Australia’s Jacob Elordi claims the extensive – and often criticised – nudity in Euphoria makes more sense than innocent shirtless scenes he has done before.

American teen drama series Euphoria is known for its sex, drugs and nudity.

The controversial – yet highly successful show – once made headlines for showing 30 penises on screen in one episode alone.

It has since become the biggest HBO hit since Game of Thrones, despite critics accusing the show of unnecessary nudity and glorifying drug use.

There would have been even more nudity if the stars of the show had not requested for it to be toned down.

Australian actor Jacob Elordi is the show’s latest star to speak out about what it was like filming *those* scenes.

The 24-year-old, who plays 18-year-old “psychopath” Nate Jacobs, said he had “no choice” but to get naked, when Ellen DeGeneres asked whether he was asked about doing the nude scenes before seeing them in the script.

“It’s like every scene is like he sleeps with this person, he does this with this person naked,” Elordi said.

However, he defended the nudity as being “OK” because it came with the nature of the character, and pointed out it was in context compared to other work he had done.

“I’ve done some movies where it gets to the point where it’s like, he goes to the mall shirtless and you’re like, why?” he said.

Elordi shot to fame in The Kissing Booth franchise, which included three teen romantic comedy films.

In a 2020 interview with Men’s Health, Elordi spoke openly about the many shirtless scenes in the first movie and how people seemed more interested in his physical appearance than his acting.

“At the time, I was super young and got thrown into a world where everyone wanted to talk about my body … it really f***ing bothered me,” he said. “I don’t identify with that whatsoever. I was trying to prove myself and be known as an actor. It was so much working out and I hated every second of it.”

Elordi, who grew up in Brisbane, told Degeneres the intimacy co-ordinator on set of Euphoria was “like a second mother”.

“She’s like ‘are you comfortable? are you OK?’ to the point where you’re like ‘yeah, yeah I’m fine’,” he said

“And the crew has been the same from the first season through the second season so it’s kind of like getting naked in front of your family.”

Degeneres pointed out jokingly that that was also weird.

“In this country, that’s weird. I don’t know what Australia is,” she said.

Elordi’s co-star American actress Sydney Sweeney, also 24, has also pointed out the work of the intimacy co-ordinator in making her comfortable on set playing high-schooler Cassie Howard, but has revealed she has asked unnecessary nudity to be removed from the script.

“There are moments where Cassie was supposed to be shirtless and I would tell Sam, ‘I don’t really think that’s necessary here.’”, she told The Independent.

She added that screenwriter Sam Levinson never made her do a nude scene she did not want to do.

Sweeney has been vocal about the “double standard” between male and female actors who choose to get naked on screen, and hopes to be a part in changing it.

“There are hour-long compilations of world-famous male actors with nude scenes who win Oscars and get praised for that work,” she told Cosmopolitan USof a time when she researched celebrities who had done nude scenes.

“But the moment a woman does it, it degrades them. They’re not actresses. They just take off their tops so they can get a role.”

She added: “I don’t think as many people took me seriously in Euphoria because I took my shirt off.”

Actress Minka Kelly, 41, who played a rich young mum on the show, also requested a nude scene be cut.

“ (Levinson) thought it would be more interesting if my dress fell to the ground,” Kelly told Vanity Fair of a scene where another character unzips her dress. “That was my first day as a guest on this new show, and I just didn’t feel comfortable standing there naked.”

Kelly requested to keep the dress on and said Levinson “didn’t even hesitate” to agree.

Another actress in the show, 24-year-old Chloe Cherry, told The Daily Beastthat her co-star and on-screen boyfriend Tyler Chase called out a scene where she was supposed to be naked and covered in blood after someone was killed.

“Sam wanted to do the scene with me completely naked and Tyler was like, ‘That’s a lot,’ so they decided not to,” she said.
