A man claiming to be the photographer which Lisa Wilkinson labelled an "old creepy guy" has penned an open letter to the Network Ten host calling for an apology before slamming her ability to criticise the paparazzi.
A photographer has penned an open letter to Network Ten host Lisa Wilkinson calling for an apology over her comments labelling him an “old creepy guy”.
The comments came after the Daily Mail published an article about Wilkinson which included several candid photographs of her eating dinner and enjoying a cocktail on her own during the weekend.
The “exclusive” article was a vivid recount of her meal detailing her every move with repeated references to her being “alone”.
The Project host addressed the pictures in a lengthy social media post saying they left her feeling “totally violated” before she labelled the photographer an “old creepy guy”.
Following the social media comments, the man who claims to be the photographer hit back at Wilkinson in an open letter – published to Michael Smith News – identifying himself as Steve before noting the offence he took at being labelled an “old creepy guy”.
“Let me introduce myself – I'm Steve – and I'm the ‘creepy old man’ who photographed you sipping margaritas during a quiet dinner alone the other day in Melbourne. Who would have thought ‘that’ would turn into ‘this’?” he began.
“Let’s deal with the ‘creepy old man’ reference first. I’m actually 10 years younger than you are, so, Lisa, what does that make you? An ‘old old woman’? Of course not, and shame on anyone who refers to you as that because it’s degrading, sexist and downright offensive.”
The man claiming to be the paparazzi who snapped Wilkinson questioned her claims that she was “aware” of him during the meal.
“You claim you were aware of a guy. ‘He was incredibly menacing. I saw him walk past half a dozen times, staring at me.’,” Steve wrote.
“Really? Here’s the thing. I did not walk past you once. Hundreds of other people did though as you’d expect given where you were sitting – in the front window of a busy hotel on possibly Melbourne’s busiest street.
“If you were feeling so ‘totally violated’ by this ‘creepy old man’ who, I note, you’ve given no description of other than to say he did not have a camera, which makes no sense given you can’t take a photo without one, then why didn’t you move to the rear of the restaurant to escape the gaze of nosy onlookers?”
Steve also questioned Wilkinson’s ability to criticise those photographing celebrities mentioning her eight years working as editor of a popular women’s magazine which “embraced the sort of celebrity journalism which you now claim is intrusive, invasive and a breach of your privacy”.
“Lisa, it is nonsense. Yes, I make a living out of taking pictures. It’s the same celebrity/entertainment journalism that pays your $2 million-a-year salary. Our platforms might be different, but in many ways our jobs are similar,” he wrote.
“So instead of the hypocrisy I think it’s time for some honesty – and perhaps even an apology. Sincerely, Steve (aka the creepy old man)”
Network Ten was contacted for comment from Lisa Wilkinson but there was no reply at the time of publication.
