Bert Newton death: Peter Ford reveals 30-year secret that Newton gifted his Gold Logie to dying AIDs patient - PerthNow

Showbiz commentator Peter Ford has honoured a promise to Bert Newton to wait until his death to reveal what may be his one of his life’s most generous gestures.

Ford revealed the legendary entertainer, who died aged 83 on Saturday, gifted his prized Gold Logie to a dying fan.

Revealing the touching story after three decades of secrecy at Newton’s request, Ford told how Newton went above and beyond for one of his friends who was dying from AIDs in a Melbourne hospital.

Ford said he had written to a number of celebrities asking them to sign a card and return it to him for the friend to see.

But Newton was the only one who didn’t respond.

“Within a week, all these celebrities had signed cards and sent them back, cheering up my friend enormously – but Bert didn’t,” Ford said.

“Five days later, I went to the hospital and there was a buzz in the air. The person on the desk said, ‘You’re not going to believe it – Bert Newton was just here’.

“He’s gone around to every single person on the AIDs ward, sat at their bedside, told them stories and made them laugh’.”

But it was what was sitting on his bedside table that really made his friend’s day.

“I went into my friend, who was suddenly energised ... I looked across to the bedside table and on that bedside table Bert had actually left him one of his Gold Logies, a complete stranger he left that to,” he said.

Ford said he called the Good Morning Australia host to thank him for the extraordinary gesture but was asked to not tell anyone until he had died.

“(He said) ‘Don’t report that until after I’ve carked it, because I’ve probably broken some Logie law by giving one of them away’,” Ford said.

Newton won four Gold Logies in his career and died away after a long battle with ill health, but remained positive until the end.

“It was one complication after another – a few weeks ago they were going to amputate the second leg, but they didn’t end up doing it,” Ford said.

“He just wanted to get home – up until 7 o’clock Saturday night, he was still talking about getting better and getting home.”

A State funeral will be held in Victoria in the coming days.

Surprise royal poised to cover for Queen - NEWS.com.au

Royal sources claim a member of the royal family is preparing to carry out duties on behalf of the Queen as the monarch recovers from a recent health scare.

The Duchess of Cornwall is being lined up to carry out duties on behalf of the Queen, it has been claimed.

Camilla, 74, is thought to be an ideal candidate to step in for the 95-year-old monarch, who has been ordered to rest for the next two weeks.

Officially, Princes Charles, Andrew, William and Harry — four royals nominated as Counsellors of State — cover if the Queen is too poorly to work

But Andrew is currently fighting sex claims and Harry has of course moved to the US.

Instead, courtiers reckon Camilla could be the ideal stand-in, especially after she won praise for her speech calling for more urgent action on tackling violence against women.

Dr Craig Prescott, a constitutional expert at Bangor University, said: “The Counsellors of State are a Plan B … but what happens when Plan B isn’t quite ideal?

“The Queen may look to add the Duchess of Cornwall, who would become a Counsellor of State when Charles is king anyway.”

Buckingham Palace would not comment on the reports.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that Camilla wants husband Charles to sever all links with scandal-hit aide Michael Fawcett, embroiled in a cash for access scandal earlier this year.

The Queen spent yesterday at Windsor Castle where she “worshipped at home” with a vicar instead of going to church.

Bert Newton gave his Gold Logie to man dying in AIDS hospital ward during visit - 7NEWS

The incredible gift Bert Newton gave to a dying man during a hospital visit has been revealed after the secret was kept for 31 years.

The four-time gold Logie award-winning entertainer, who had a leg amputated in May due to a life-threatening infection, died at a private clinic in Melbourne on Saturday night.

On Monday, entertainment reporter Peter Ford said he was going to finally reveal a touching story about Newton he had waited three decades to tell.

Ford was told by his friend never to report the story until Newton had “carked it”.

“I thought, that is a rotten deal, you are never going to die!” Ford told The Morning Show on Monday.

Ford said in 1990 he had a friend who had AIDS and was dying in the Fairfield Infectious Disease hospital, with just weeks to live.

As his friend was a fan of showbusiness, Ford sent off cards to various celebrities asking if they would sign them and post them back.

All of the celebrities did so, except Newton.

“I thought, that’s a shame,” Ford said.

“Then five or six days later, I went to the hospital and there was a different buzz in the air.

“I asked what was going on and he said: ‘You won’t believe it, but Bert Newton has just left and has been here for hours’.”

Newton visited every single patient in the ward and sat with them to tell stories and make them laugh.

“I went into my friend who was suddenly energised and I looked across at the bedside table and, Bert had actually left one of his Gold Logies,” Ford said.

“I rang Bert and said: ‘I can’t believe you did that.’

“He said it’s OK, but he thinks he has broken some kind of Logie law by doing it, so you can never report it until the day I have gone.”

On Sunday morning, his wife Patti spoke outside the Newton’s family home in Hawthorn East about their final moments together.

“It’s very, very devastating. All our hearts are breaking because he was just the most wonderful man,” she said.

“I left at ten past seven, and I was just pulling around to come into my drive and I get the call to say he’d taken his last breath at 7.22pm.

“So I missed him, but maybe he didn’t want me to be there for his last breath.

“He had such a fabulous attitude. And he gave us so much joy right up to the end.”

Drug kingpin who snitched is executed - NEWS.com.au

He was immortalised in film and the songs of countless rappers but notorious drug dealer Alpo Martinez is now dead after a brutal killing.

A notorious drug dealer from New York City who served decades in prison for murder — and was in witness protection for testifying against his associates — was slain on a Harlem street corner in his truck Sunday morning, police sources said.

Alberto “Alpo” Martinez, a drug kingpin who was portrayed by Cam’ron in the 2002 movie “Paid In Full,” was killed in a drive-by shooting as he sat in his 2017 Dodge Ram at 147th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard around 3.30am, cops said. He was shot five times.

Martinez, whose last known address was in Maine, was rushed to Harlem Hospital but couldn’t be saved.

A high-ranking police source said Martinez was in danger as soon as he returned to his old stomping ground.

“You were in the witness protection program because you testified against other drug dealers,” the source said.

“You’d make a lot of enemies who have a score to settle,” the source said. “When you return to the same area, word will get out very fast. He’s back in the zone.”

The source, who said Martinez’s vehicle had paper plates from Texas, said it wasn’t clear if Martinez had left witness protection entirely or was just back for a visit.

Photos from the scene showed his bullet-ridden, red truck.

“It seems pretty intentional when you shoot somebody five times,” a police source said. There were no immediate arrests.

Born on June 8, 1966, Alpo Martinez was raised in East Harlem, New York.

At the age of 13, Martinez reportedly got involved in the business of selling drugs. He quickly rose up the chain in Harlem, becoming one of the city’s biggest dealers.

He later relocated to Washington DC, where he expanded his operations and met the man who would later become his bodyguard and alleged hit man.

On November 7, 1991, Martinez was arrested in Washington for selling drugs.

Among his charges were drugs, conspiracy to commit murder, and 14 counts of murder. To lower his sentence, Martinez became an informant and testified against the people in his circle.

Martinez was given a sentence of 35 years in prison, and was reportedly released in 2015 to the federal witness protection program.

“Paid in Full” was based on the story of Martinez and his partners Rich Porter and Azie Faison.

He was profiled on a 2012 episode of the TV series “Gangsters: America’s Most Evil” and name-checked by numerous rappers, including Nas in “Memory Lane (Sittin’ In Da Park)” and songs by Drake, Jay-Z and 50 Cent.

Kim, Pete spotted holding hands - NEWS.com.au

This is a pairing we didn’t see coming … Kim Kardashian has been seen getting cosy with comedian Pete Davidson at a US theme park.

Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson have been spotted holding hands at a theme park in the US.

The unlikely pair – who are both fresh from respective breakups – enjoyed a date night at Knott’s Berry Farm in California with newly engaged couple Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker on Saturday.

The 41-year-old billionaire reality star and Saturday Night Live! comedian, 27, were filmed by a fan walking side-by-side at the park, while People obtained exclusive pictures of them holding hands on a rollercoaster.

Kardashian, who is in the middle of a divorce with Kanye West, was a special guest on SNL last month, where she performed an Aladdin-inspired skit with Davidson.

The duo shared a kiss during the skit, which saw them dressed as Aladdin and Princess Jasmine riding on a magic carpet.

Despite the cosy looking photos, People claims an insider said they were “just friends”.

“They hang in the same circles so they will be together from time to time. It’s just friends hanging out,” a source told the publication.

Kardashian filed for divorce from West in March after seven years of marriage. They share four children together North, 8, Saint, 5, Chicago, 3, and Psalm, 2.

Davidson, for his part, recently dated Bridgerton star Phoebe Dynevor for five months before they split in August.

He was linked to his Meet Cute co-star, Kaley Cuoco, in September, though the pair are yet to comment on rumours.

Davidson was briefly engaged to pop star Ariana Grande in 2018, before having relationships with British actress Kate Beckinsale and US model Kaia Gerber.

Photo that sparked explosive Zayn clash - NEWS.com.au

The leaked photo at the centre of the shocking argument between Zayn Malik and his baby’s grandmother, Yolanda Hadid, has been revealed.

Zayn Malik and Yolanda Hadid were at war over a leaked photo of Gigi’s baby Khai, say their friends.

The ex One Direction singer has been charged with harassing Gigi and allegedly shoving her mum Yolanda into a dresser after a verbal and “physical” altercation at his Pennsylvania home.

Now, friends have revealed that Zayn – who has always hidden his daughter’s face on social media – was furious when Yolanda shared a photo of baby Khai’s face to her millions of Instagram followers.

Yolanda posted a sweet photo tribute to the baby back in January – and fans spotted Khai’s reflection in a mirror on the wall.

Yolanda quickly deleted the snap and shared another version with Khai’s face cropped out, but the damage was already done.

An insider told The Sun: “Back in January, Yolanda accidentally posted a photo of Khai where you could see her face and Zayn went crazy – he’s so protective of his daughter’s privacy, he was so mad.

“Yolanda deleted it immediately but things were tense.

“Yolanda doesn’t see what the issue is, but Zayn – and Gigi – are very against their child being photographed and it’s been a huge cause of tension between them.”

Gigi and Zayn welcomed their daughter, Khai, in September 2020 after five years of on-again-off-again dating.

Zayn has since publicly admitted his values clash with Yolanda’s.

She introduced her daughters Gigi and Bella to fans on reality show Real Housewives from a very young age.

Zayn said in a statement last night: “As you all know I am a private person and I very much want to create a safe and private place for my daughter to grow up in.

“A place where private family matters aren’t thrown on the world stage for all to poke and pick apart.”

He also referenced the allegations, adding: “In an effort to protect that space for (Khai), I agreed to not contest claims arising from an argument I had with a family member of my partner’s who entered our home while my partner was away several weeks ago.”

Seemingly hinting that he and Gigi had split, Zayn added he wants to “co-parent my daughter in a manner in which she deserves”.

He said: “This was and still should be a private matter but it seems for now there is divisiveness and despite my efforts to restore us to a peaceful family environment that will allow for me to co-parent my daughter in a manner in which she deserves, this has been ‘leaked’ to the press.

“I am hopeful though for healing for all involved with the harsh words shared and more importantly I remain vigilant to protect Khai and give her the privacy she deserves.”

Yolanda, a Dutch-American television personality and former model best known as a star of US reality TV show The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills, has not publicly addressed the incident.

Yolanda is also mother to the models Bella, 25, and Anwar, 22, who is the boyfriend of pop star Dua Lipa.

She was married to the property developer Mohamed Hadid, 72, for six years until their split in 2000.

Gigi previously told Harper’s Bazaar that Malik and her mother got along well.

She said, “he’s usually on my mum’s side,” adding: “So, he’s smart in that sense.”

Malik, who once dated Little Mix singer Perrie Edwards, launched a solo career after leaving One Direction in 2015.

His most recent album, January’s Nobody Is Listening, peaked at 17 in the UK albums chart.

Matthew Newton reportedly won't return for Bert Newton's state funeral - NEWS.com.au

Bert Newton will be farewelled in a state funeral in Melbourne this week but there will reportedly be one very notable absence – his son Matthew.

Aussie TV legend Bert Newton and his wife Patti appeared to have it all – glittering careers, a beautiful family. But their troubled relationship with son Matthew would lead to years of heartache for the famous pair.

Now, Confidential has reported Matthew, 44, is “unlikely” to return to Australia from New York for his father’s state funeral, after Bert passed away on Saturday, aged 83.

It’s a relationship that wasn’t always easy.

Newton and wife Patti spoke of their heartbreak to A Current Affair in 2010 following

two alleged domestic violence incidents involving then fiance Rachael Taylor at a hotel in Rome.

Matthew Newton allegedly “punched Taylor in the face before being sedated by ambulance officers”. Taylor suffered a concussion and took out an apprehended violence order (AVO) against Newton.

Bert told of his pain after he picked his son up from the airport and took him to Wentworthville’s Northside West Clinic.

“We should have seen the signs … but we didn’t,” Newton told ACA, admitting his son’s life had become a “train wreck”.

“When it concerns your child you say ‘well, of course we love him and we support him’,” Newton said. “I think I made an error in saying that because I do love him and I do support him, but I don’t support or condone any of the things that have happened.”

Matthew Newton, who had impressed critics with roles in Looking for Alibrandi and Underbelly, had four years earlier faced court over charges he assaulted his previous girlfriend, Neighbours star Brooke Satchwell. He pleaded guilty to one count of common assault and was given a 12-month good behaviour bond but his conviction was later overturned on mental health grounds.

Bert Newton confirmed his son had long abused drugs and alcohol, although he said they were not the root of his problems.

“His biggest problem is the fact that it’s not a drug, it’s not an alcohol problem as much as it’s a mental health issue,” Patti said.

“He’s always had a bit of a problem with his temper, even as a kid, but I do think it’s accelerated. We don’t know how to handle it.”

“There was a bomb about to go off somewhere, sometime,” Patti said.

Matthew Newton’s problems didn’t end after his split from Taylor.

In 2011, he was charged with breaching the terms of the AVO Taylor had taken out on him. Then in December he was charged with assaulting a 66-year-old taxi driver twice in the Sydney suburb of Crows Nest, but was unable to attend court because he was not allowed to leave the US because he was also facing charges there.

Those charges related to two incidents in Miami, Florida.

He was charged with trespassing and resisting officers as well as battery after he attacked a hotel receptionist.

In November 2012 both matters were dismissed, conditional upon Newton completing 50 hours of community service, writing a letter of apology to the hotel clerk, Ariel Bory Vargas, paying $US11,500 restitution to Vargas and staying away from both him and Mr Moe’s, the bar where he was accused of trespass.

Newton stayed in the US, settling in New York where he met Catherine Schneiderman, 28, the daughter of New York’s former Attorney-General Eric Schneiderman.

The pair secretly married three years ago but none of the Newtons were reportedly at the wedding.

Newton managed to stay out of the headlines for years until 2018 when he was forced to step down as director of Jessica Chastain’s movie Ava, which he also wrote, when she was criticised for being an advocate for the Time’s Up movement while appointing a director with a history of domestic violences offences.

Matthew Newton said in a statement that he understood the backlash and was trying to be a better man.

“Over the past eight years I have been working extensively with healthcare professionals to help me overcome my addiction and mental health illness,” he said. “I have lived a quiet and sober life. All I can do now is try to be a living amends and hopefully contribute to the positive change occurring in our industry.”

Despite working on his mental health and addiction issues, Newton reportedly refused to travel home to Australia to see his ailing father despite being urged to be his wife, Catherine.

“She understands there is bad blood between them and Matthew has deep trauma from the way they lived such public lives while he was struggling with his mental health,” a source told New Idea earlier this year. “But Cat can’t bear to see Matthew’s family missing him at such an important and distressing time. Her biggest fear is Matthew not burying the hatchet with Bert and living the rest of his life with unresolved grievances.”

It is unknown if the Newtons were on better terms with Matthew at the time of Bert’s death.

Camilla to step up amid Queen’s health scare - NEWS.com.au

Palace aides are reportedly working on plans for the Duchess of Cornwall to take on a much bigger role, as the Queen is ordered to rest.

Palace aides are reportedly working on plans for the Duchess of Cornwall to take on a much bigger role, as the Queen battles a health scare.

Her Majesty has been ordered to rest for at least two weeks as she recovers from a mysterious illness, and has cancelled all public engagements during that period. She has instead been advised to stick to “light, desk-based activities”.

The COP26 climate change conference in Glasgow is among several of the royal engagements she has been forced to cancel.

The Queen had recently been admitted to hospital for tests after pulling out of a planned trip to Northern Ireland. She was reportedly seen by specialists at the private King Edward VII’s Hospital in central London, and her admission was understood not to be related to coronavirus.

The news of her health issues has raised concerns about future leadership plans if the 95-year-old Monarch becomes unable to fulfil her role as Head of State.

Reports have emerged that daughter-in-law Camilla, 74, may be asked to help manage the workload. She could even be appointed to a top group of senior royals who could carry out duties on the Queen’s behalf, sources told the UK’s Daily Mail.

Camilla has been receiving much positive attention lately, after being praised for her speech last week at a reception in recognition of the of the Shameless! Festival, which aims to bring together activism and art to confront and change attitudes towards sexual violence.

Legally, four members of the royal family are entitled as “Counsellors of the State” to take over from the Queen if she’s unable to perform her duties: Prince Charles, Prince William, Prince Andrew and Prince Harry.

They are chosen as they are next in the line of the throne and are all aged over 18.

However, the problem is that Prince Andrew and Prince Harry are not currently working members of the royal family.

Under the rules, two Counsellors of State must act together to perform important duties including providing Royal assent to bills passing through parliament. The UK government would theoretically be incapacitated if the two State counsellors are unable to take this action.

Dr Craig Prescott, a constitutional expert at Bangor University, said the situation poses a potential problem.

“There is a small but genuine risk that the non-availability of Counsellors of State could impede the operation of the constitution,” he said. “It could certainly make the day-to-day running of Government much more tricky.

“The Counsellors of State are a Plan B from a constitutional point of view, but what happens when Plan B isn’t quite ideal?

“The Queen may look to add the Duchess of Cornwall, who would become a Counsellor of State when Charles is King anyway. Or they could go down the line to Princesses Beatrice or Eugenie, or add more members of the family, like Princess Anne or Prince Edward to the list.”

One example of the potential problem is when Prince Charles jets off for an official tour of Jordan and Egypt in mid-November, Prince William will remain the only Counsellor of State for that period.

In recent weeks, the Queen has started using a walking stick in public, agreed to skip her nightly gin martini for the sake of her health and faces the possibility of having to give up riding until next year because she is, as a royal source told the Mirror, “resting and taking every precaution to get back to full fitness”.

On Saturday, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the Queen is in “very good form” after having a routine conversation with her.

Friends and family of the late Bert Newton say farewell to Australian entertainment legend - ABC News

Patti Newton spent most of her Saturday with her husband at his hospital bedside, before leaving shortly after 7pm.

As she pulled into her driveway, she received a telephone call telling her that her husband of 46 years had taken his last breath just 10 minutes after her departure.

"I missed him, just. But maybe he didn't want me to be there for his last breath, so he probably left without me there. Which is probably a good thing," she said.

For a man who spent so much of his life in full public view, his last moments were spent in the seclusion of palliative care.

But, as the Newton family awoke this morning, they were inundated with messages of love for the late Bert Newton.

"All our hearts are breaking, but the outpouring of love has been fabulous," she said.

"I think, if he's looking down on us today, he would be just so thrilled to hear the Prime Minister and all the people that he admired so much making these lovely statements."

And, as the tributes flow for one of Australia's greatest entertainers, one word has been repeated about the man that graced television screens in homes across the country for more than six decades: irreplaceable.

The death of Bert Newton at age 83 leaves a void in the Australian entertainment landscape, with those who knew him best reflecting on the laughs, the memories and the loveable performer known as Moonface.

To his peers and colleagues, Newton was destined to be a television star from the very moment he stepped in front of a camera.

Longtime friend and colleague Pete Smith said Newton's talent was evident from the very beginning..

"In the early days of television, those lucky enough to get an appearance were learning on camera," he said.

"There was one person who wasn't learning. He already had that wonderful talent, and his name was Bert Newton."

But, for someone with so much onscreen charisma, it was his rare gift of being able to share the spotlight that made him truly special.

"If you were performing on television, even just doing a simple commercial, Bert made you feel as though you were the only person that counted. He did that with everybody, from Graham Kennedy and Don Lane on down," Smith said.

"He was very generous. If he knew you were on a roll, that you were being funny, he'd just let you go," said John-Michael Howson, who worked alongside Newton as a reporter on Good Morning Australia.

Wherever Newton went, the spotlight followed.

His move to Network 10 in 1992 to host Good Morning Australia brought fanfare and attention that his new co-workers were not accustomed to.

Newton made it cool to watch morning shows.

"Before that time, it was a little bit of a graveyard. He'd been at Channel 9, he'd been at Channel 7. He'd been primetime and suddenly, everybody was watching us," said Laura Mercer, who worked as a producer with Newton on Good Morning Australia.

"It gave the rest of us a career."

The show's musical director, John Foreman, said the 12 years he spent working with Newton was a highlight of his career.

"I loved working with Bert so much. It was such a great time in my life and such a great time for everybody [who] worked on that show," he said.

"He knew every detail of how television worked and we'll never see his like again."

Newton brought his workhorse attitude to the show and instilled the same work ethic into his team.

Together, they filmed more than 3,000 episodes of Good Morning Australia, producing 12 and a half hours of television each week ,with Bert's charm and a comforting promise to see us all tomorrow.

When the cameras stopped rolling, a different side of Bert could be seen.

"I think, sometimes, he would be a little bit quieter behind the scenes in the dressing room, because he probably needed a break from talking to so many people," Ms Mercer said.

Colleagues would see his gentle and generous nature come to the fore, from small notes of encouragement or kind gifts and words to those in need.

For colleagues such as Rhonda Burchmore, it was Newton's loyalty as a friend that she will cherish most.

"One of my fondest memories was probably the lowest point in my career when I got all this incredible flak for opening Melbourne's casino so many years ago," Burchmore said.

"I nearly wanted to give up the business and it was actually Bert who pulled me out of that trench and said, 'Come on, you're not going to let those people get the best of you'.

It was a side of Newton that many who grew up watching him may not have seen.

"He wasn't a gregarious person," Howson said.

"He wasn't someone you'd see at big parties. The curtain would come down, and he and Patti would go."

It was his family that was Newton's true love, including granddaughters Lola and Eva, who Patti said were his pride and joy.

"Lola and Eva have been the love of his life. That's why he kept going, I think, but he realised that he just couldn't do it anymore," Patti said.

And while the Australian public was enamoured with Newton's pairings with Graham Kennedy and Don Lane, his greatest partnership was undoubtedly with his wife, Patti.

"I have to think that he's at peace and that he's not in any pain. Nothing else can hurt him," she said.

"He was just the most wonderful man."

Despite all the fame and accolades, deep down Bert Newton remained a boy from Fitzroy, fiercely proud and loyal to his hometown.

"I used to say to him, 'You could have made it in the States', but he didn't want to go. Melbourne was his home. He didn't even go to Sydney," Howson said.

"The Melbourne audience loved him. He was one of our own. He was sort of like the Shrine of Remembrance. He was part of our country, part of our city."

It is only fitting then that the boy from Fitzroy will be given the full honours of a state funeral, a gesture that Patti said Bert would love.

While the curtain has come down and the spotlight has dimmed, Newton will have the opportunity for one last encore at St Patrick's Cathedral, where the public can say goodbye to a legend of the Australian entertainment industry.

Lisa paid more than Karl ‘for six years’ - NEWS.com.au

Lisa Wilkinson says if she did earn more than Karl Stefanovic at first, it “didn’t last long”. That depends on your definition of the word “long”.

Lisa Wilkinson was paid a higher salary than her former Today co-host Karl Stefanovic for more than half of their time on-air together, according to Nine Network insiders.

There’s been plenty of debate from both camps over the details surrounding Wilkinson’s sudden departure from Nine in 2017, which she first laid bare in her upcoming autobiography, It Wasn’t Meant To Be Like This.

At the time, and in her memoir, Wilkinson claimed she had been axed from the network after demanding a salary increase to close a significant “gender pay gap” between herself and Stefanovic.

In a twist last week, news.com.au reported that she had actually been poached from Seven to host the Today show in 2007 with a salary offer which was “more than double” Stefanovic’s.

News.com.au understands that when Wilkinson first signed with Nine in 2007 she was earning more than $700,000. The fresh-faced Stefanovic, who joined Today after returning from a reporting stint in Los Angeles, earned less than half that amount for years as the TV couple co-hosted Nine’s breakfast TV program.

Wilkinson hit back at these reports in an interview with The Sunday Telegraphtoday, claiming the fact she was initially paid more was “news to me” – and that if that had been the case, “you can be sure it didn’t last long”.

However, Nine insiders say her salary actually remained higher than Stefanovic’s for the majority of their partnership – more than six of the 10 years they co-hosted the show.

According to the source, Wilkinson was given two three-year contracts that saw her earn more than Stefanovic. He was eventually offered a new $2 million deal, which saw his salary jump in front.

Wilkinson’s management has been contacted for comment.

The Telegraph pointed to Wilkinson’s position in 2007 as an “established TV host and experienced journalist” as reasoning for why her salary had been so much higher than Stefanovic’s.

At the time she was poached to join Nine, Wilkinson was two years into a hosting gig alongside Chris Reason on Weekend Sunrise, while Stefanovic had spent a similar amount of time on the Today desk, five days a week, alongside Tracy Grimshaw and then Jessica Rowe.

Reports amid her departure from Nine in 2017 claimed that Wilkinson stood to secure a $700,000 pay rise, with her take home pay rising from $1.1 million to $1.8 million.

The Nine Network’s then chief executive officer, Hugh Marks, hit out at Wilkinson in The Daily Telegraph at the time, publicly claiming she was offered a $1.8 million salary package but wanted $2.3 million – which would have pushed her well above Stefanovic’s annual salary of $2 million.

“I went to an incredible amount of trouble to build that [$1.8 million] package for her. She wanted $2.3 million. It wasn’t a $200,000 shortfall to [Karl’s] $2 million magic number. It was $500,000,” Marks said at the time.

Wilkinson has now rubbished that figure, telling The Sunday Telegraph that Marks’ comment was “completely untrue” and that the figure he named “is not even remotely close” to what they had discussed.

“I didn’t dream anything. I simply asked that since Karl and I had recently taken the Today show to number one in 2016, that there be a more equal share of the greatly increased spoils of the show’s success, especially once I knew the extent of the gender pay gap that existed between us,” she said.

The Block 2021 front yard reveal: Josh and Luke's Front Garden and Facade week 12 | Season 17 - Nine Shows

Josh and Luke had a late start to Front Yard and Façade Week because they had to clear the outdoor area of mess before getting started.

They also changed their plans for their fourth bedroom by scrapping the ensuite after the judges' scathing feedback. Instead they decided to put another bathroom at the back of the garage.

Stream the latest episodes of The Block for free on 9Now.

Once that was done it was on to the massive floating steps leading to their front door. But it wasn't smooth sailing; the twins were forced to make last minute tweaks to the engineering when sand was in short supply.

They managed to get the floating steps finished in time, to create the hero feature of their front yard and façade.

Click through to see what judges Shaynna Blaze, Darren Palmer and Neale Whitaker thought of the space.

Bert Newton will be farewelled in state funeral, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews confirms - ABC News

Television icon Bert Newton will receive a state funeral, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has confirmed.

Newton died aged 83 in his hometown of Melbourne.

The legend of Australian screens spent more than six decades on stage and screen and became one of the country's most loved personalities.

He was born in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy and boasted TV credits including In Melbourne Tonight, The Graham Kennedy Show, The Don Lane Show, Good Morning Australia, New Faces, Bert's Family Feud and 20 to 1.

The Premier said Newton was "an icon, a larrikin and a born entertainer".

"We will all have an opportunity to honour his memory, his talent and his achievements at a state funeral — details will be shared in the coming days," Mr Andrews said.

Newton is survived by his wife Patti and two children, Lauren and Matthew.

Newton's long-time friend and entertainment reporter Peter Ford said Mr Andrews contacted Patti on Saturday night to offer the state funeral.

The likely venue will be at St Patrick's Cathedral, Ford said.

Tributes have been pouring since news of Newton's death was confirmed late on Saturday.

He has been described as a giant of the industry who brought "unbridled joy and laughter" into the homes of millions, and the "ultimate entertainer".

"But above all his achievements, he was a family man and his greatest partnership was with his wife of almost 50 years, Patti," Mr Andrews said in his statement.
