Sydney's 2GB breakfast show suffers historic loss to Kyle and Jackie O - ABC News

2GB has been knocked off the top spot in Sydney’s breakfast radio ratings for the first time in almost 18 years.

The loss is the end of an era for the show, now hosted by Ben Fordham, following broadcaster Alan Jones's retirement from radio last year.

KIIS 106.5 duo Kyle and Jackie O have now taken the lead in their biggest rating win since they began broadcasting 21 years ago.

Fordham was quick to commend the pair on Twitter this morning.

“Congrats Kyle and Jackie O on the win in the radio ratings. You’ve worked hard over decades and deserve the victory,” he said.

Jackie O and Kyle Sandilands grew their audience by 2.6 share points in the fourth radio survey of the year.

The show jumped to 15.5 per cent, the highest share the pair has had in more than two decades.

The pair said they were thrilled at the result and praised their audience for their loyalty.

"The result comes down to the show’s broad appeal with both the young hip listeners and the on-their-way-out oldies enjoying what we’re doing," Sandilands said.

"A special shout-out today to the radio executives that told Jackie and I in 2013 that our show had peaked and would no longer rate.

“I think I’m still in shock. What an amazing result! We always dreamed of this day but weren’t sure it would ever come, well today is the day! Twenty-one years of hard work has finally paid off,” Jackie O said.

Fordham’s breakfast share slipped to 13.3 per cent in this survey and in the June survey he was close to being toppled by either ABC Radio Sydney or KIIS FM.

Nine Radio's head of content Greg Byrne said despite the loss, 2GB still had a strong hold over the Sydney market.

"2GB and 3AW remain the clear No.1 stations in Sydney and Melbourne," said Mr Byrnes said.

“In Sydney, Ben Fordham maintained his audience share and Ray Hadley remains well clear of his nearest competitor in Mornings. We also congratulate Kyle and Jackie O on the result they posted in this survey.”

ABC Sydney with Robbie Buck and Wendy Harmer declined by 1.2 share points to an audience share of 11.9 per cent, landing them in third place.
