There’s a new face on the Upper East Side, and though this is her first time around this particular block, she knows this street all too well.
Gossip Girl episode 3, which dropped on Binge last night, features a guest star that’s going to make You fans scream: Elizabeth Lail.
Before Gossip Girl was rebooted this year, it had a spiritual sequel in the form of Lifetime and Netflix’s smash hit series, You.
Throughout the original Gossip Girl Penn Badgley starred as Dan Humphrey, a loveable outsider who tried desperately to join the ranks of Manhattan’s most elite by any means necessary.

Sometimes that meant attending a glamorous party he didn’t want to; sometimes it meant publishing scathing exposes about his closest friends.
But even when Dan was at his worst and displayed his most stalker-like tendencies, the characters of Gossip Girl were always quick to forgive him. And then along came You.
Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble’s ominously titled thriller saw Badgley playing another outsider. But this time, instead of publishing a few nasty articles, Joe’s (Badgley) obsession to belong routinely drove him to murder.
Season 1 revolved around manipulating a romance with Elizabeth Lail’s Beck, and Season 2 followed roughly the same format, this time centering around Victoria Pedretti’s Love.
Manipulating love (the concept) was Dan’s whole game. In Gossip Girl’s finale he admitted that he only created Gossip Girl so that he could eventually infiltrate Serena’s (Blake Lively) inner circle.
You smartly turns this underdog narrative on its head, pushing the “nice guy” trope Dan lived and died by to its absolute extreme and turning him into a monster.
Even Badgley has noted, “It’s the same role. But now he has blood dripping down his face.”

That’s why Lail’s appearance in the 2021 Gossip Girl feels so juicy. Her character was the bleeding heart who proved that the “sweet” Dan Humphrey was actually a creep hiding in plain sight.
Adding to this complex cameo is Lail’s role in the new Gossip Girl.
Lail plays Lola Morgan, an unknown singer-songwriter who is secretly dating Julien’s (Jordan Alexander) father. Struggling artsy type in New York? Check. Overly trusting and romantic? Check. Terrible taste in men? Giant verified check.
Lola even talks like Beck.
In the latest GG ep, Lola meets a partying Julien in the bathroom of a club. After Julien tells her about how she’s doing a walkabout to get over her ex, Lola half-screams, “You are a warrior! Maybe I should be too. I have been dating my boyfriend for a year and he still won’t go public with me.” That right there is drunk Beck from You.

The rest of the episode follows Julien as she forces her father to own up to his secret girlfriend. Of course, this is all done in a very Gossip Girl fashion that involves the opening night of a Jeremy O. Harris play, gowns, and a competing secret-dad-relationship scheme.
But by the episode’s end Julien makes amends with her father, and he vows to be more transparent about his dating life.
You know what that means? We’re going to be seeing more of you, Lail. Hope that doesn’t make you uncomfortable.
