Katie Hopkins admits to breaking hotel quarantine rules in Sydney - Sydney Morning Herald

Conservative English media personality Katie Hopkins has admitted she has been deliberately flouting infection control in hotel quarantine in Sydney, after flying into the country this week.

Ms Hopkins told her Instagram followers on Saturday morning she was trying to taunt the guards in her hotel by answering her door naked and without a mask.

“The police officer who checked me in told me when they knock on my door I have to wait 30 seconds ’til I can open the door [to collect food],” she laughed in the Instagram Live video which is no longer viewable on her account. “Then I can open the door but only if I wear a face mask.”

She then went on to describe how she tried to open the door to her room as soon as she heard a knock.

“[To] frighten the shit out of them and do it naked with no face mask,” she laughs. “What I want is the sergeant in the foyer to come up and tell me off so that I can stand there naked while he tells me off.”

The Instagram video quickly drew furious criticism from politicians and ordinary Australians.

Victorian MP Andrew Giles said in a media release that Ms Hopkins’ behaviour was “grossly disrespectful to frontline workers who are only trying to keep us safe.”

Fellow Victorian Labor MP Josh Burns expressed disbelief that Hopkins was granted a visa and a place in quarantine ahead of returning Australian citizens. “This is a woman who called Islam disgusting, migrants cockroaches’ and called for a “final solution”.

Greens senator for NSW Mehreen Faruqi also questioned how the controversial commentator was granted a visa when so many Australians, including herself, were separated from loved ones overseas.

“It’s as breathtaking as it is soul-crushing,” she wrote.

Alun from Sydney tweeted: “This is a kick in the face to all Aussies abroad who can’t get home.”

The right wing commentator’s arrival comes as American celebrity Caitlyn Jenner also landed in Sydney this week to appear on Channel 7’s upcoming series of Big Brother, according to celebrity news website TMZ.

The arrival of the two celebrities into the country comes as at least 30,000 Australians remain stranded overseas and passenger caps for those returning have been halved to about 3000 a week.

A Channel 7 spokeswoman would not confirm whether Hopkins and Jenner were brought to Australia for the show when contacted by The Age and Sydney Morning Herald.

Previous hotel quarantine leaks in Australia have been blamed on contagious hotel guests spreading COVID-19 into hallways and infecting staff.

The staggered timing of food deliveries is an attempt to mitigate that risk.

Ms Hopkins said in an earlier video still posted on her account that she believed lockdowns were “the biggest hoax of all time”.

“Before you ask how have I managed to get here, you will know that I have always called lockdown the greatest hoax in human history – I have never subscribed to it,” she said in the video, posted on Friday from her Sydney hotel room.

“So in terms of hypocrisy I see that with politicians who are locking people down, but I’ve never been an advocate for that.”

She then goes on to tell her followers how more than 12 million Australians are locked down in Melbourne and Sydney because political leaders have been able to “twist the COVID conversation” to be about cases, as opposed to deaths or hospitalisations.

“There are only three cases in Melbourne, and yet Melbourne has gone into the harshest of lockdowns,” she said.

“It’s hard to observe much when you’re in isolation or quarantine but what I can observe is a country that is deeply unhappy, and has been deeply disrupted by [just a few] cases of COVID.”

There are now 43 local cases in Victoria with no hospitalisations or deaths.

In Sydney there are 1039 active cases. There are 75 in hospital, including 21 intensive care. Three people have died.

Ms Hopkins has been contacted for a response.
