Dieter Brummer quit acting to become a window washer and run his own business - NEWS.com.au

For anyone coming of age in the 1990s, TV heart-throb Dieter Brummer appeared to have it all.

The Australian actor, who was found dead in his home in Glenhaven, in Sydney’s north-west on Saturday, rose to fame at the age of 15 in 1991 thanks to his award-winning turn as Shane Parrish in Home And Away.

Brummer won back-to-back Silver Logies for Most Popular Actor in 1995 and 1996.

Alongside Melissa George as his H&A wife Angel, he was one of TV’s power couples, gracing most entertainment magazines and even named “The Prince of Soap” by Dolly magazine in 1995.

However, he asked to be written out of the popular soap in 1996 at the height of his fame amid rumours that he and George couldn’t stand to be in the same room together.

“Mel was incredibly ambitious right from the outset,” he told Woman’s Day in 2012. “I think she wanted to be the next Kylie Minogue.”

That clashed with his own humble personality, so while George and other Home And Away alum from that era like Isla Fisher and Heath Ledger set their sights on Hollywood, Brummer soon decided it was time to get what he felt was a real job.

“It was a pretty intense time coming out of high school to receive all this fame and adulation. As great as it was I wanted to prove to myself I could get my hands dirty and sweat for a buck as easily as standing around on set, being primped and preened,” he told TV Tonight.

After brief appearances on shows like Medevac and Shark Bay he took some time out before deciding to use his love of rock climbing to become a high-rise window cleaner and successfully run his own business.

“I was so busy as a teenager I didn’t get to join friends on trips or do a lot of the things my friends got to do. I spent the early part of my 20s catching up on a few years that I’d missed out on,” he said.

“People say that I’m just a window cleaner, in reality it’s substantially more involved than that. Working at heights it’s a relatively specialist trade.

“I just wanted to get a bit of real life experience under my belt, but I’d always intended on coming back to the acting game at some point.”

Brummer also started a secret private relationship with Kristy Wright, who had just joined Home And Away as Chloe Richards.

Wright has shared a tribute to Brummer on Instagram, calling the actor her “first true love”.

Many appeared to take delight in his journey from pin-up boy to blue-collar worker.

And yet even years on he found it hard to find his way back to Australian TV screens with many casting directors unable to see him as anyone but Home And Away’s Shane Parrish.

“You get typecast. It’s hard for producers or casting agents not to remember. I’m still ‘that bloke from Home And Away’ 20 years later,” Brummer said. “Sometimes you sit back and think, ‘I wonder what it would’ve been like if I didn’t get that job at 15?’”

He appeared on an episode of Where Are They Now and joined the reality show Celebrity Circus but had largely disappeared from the public eye.

However, after watching the first series of Underbelly, which featured a few of his Home And Away co-stars whose careers had stalled, that he was inspired to focus on acting again.

“I figured Les Hill can do it, Daniel Amalm can do it, and so did quite a few people from the first series I had either worked with or known in the past. I think the Australian public enjoys seeing faces that they might not have seen for a long time. Fingers crossed it does well for those of us who have been around for a while or are rehashing our careers,” he said.

He was cast as Detective Trevor Haken in the second series of Underbelly with a more substantial role in the third season of the show.

He followed that role up with a stint on Neighbours as Troy Miller.

However his role as Jason Ross in Winners and Losers in 2014 would be his last credited TV performance.

That year Brummer told TV Week that he was not “proud” of his acting on Home And Away.

“From the clips I’ve seen on YouTube, it’s hard not to cringe,” he said.
