Queen’s cousin Prince Michael of Kent accused of selling access to Vladimir Putin - NEWS.com.au

An undercover investigation has accused Prince Michael of Kent of selling access to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s regime to business clients.

A joint investigation by the UK’s Sunday Times and Channel 4 secretly filmed a business meeting with the Queen’s cousin where he told covert reporters that he could be hired for £10,000 ($A17,800) a day to make representations to the Kremlin.

During the recording, the prince indicated he would give potential clients his royal endorsement in a recorded speech for a fee of $US200,000 ($A255,000) and appeared willing to use his home at Kensington Palace as the location.

Prince Michael’s friend and business associate, the Marquess of Reading, also attended the meeting and told journalists the royal has a role as “Her Majesty’s unofficial ambassador to Russia” and could meet with the Russian leader.

The aristocrat informed the reporters — who were posing as executives from a fake South Korean company — that the monarch’s services were “confidential”.

“We’re talking relatively discreetly here because we wouldn’t want the world to know that he is seeing Putin purely for business reasons,” the Marquess of Reading told reporters.

The undercover journalists offered $US50,000 ($A63,000) a month for the advisory work in Russia in addition to the speech, and the marquess said the prince had “reacted positively” to the offer.

The meeting was filmed as part of an investigation into how members of the royal family have been selling their links to the Queen for personal profit.

The prince’s private secretary, Camilla Rogers, told the journalists he usually went to St Petersburg once a year and Moscow twice a year. She said his next visit would be in October and suggested that he could use his links to help the company make contacts in Russia.

Asked whether the prince could make introductions to the people high up in the Russian government, she said: “We can certainly help in that sense.”

She added: “Even if he doesn’t have direct contact to the person that you want, there is a way in. There is always a way in.”

The Sunday Times approached both men to comment on the investigation. The Marquess said he had “over-promised” while the prince, 78, denied having a “special relationship” with Putin and said he had not been in contact with Putin or his office since 2003.
