Patti Newton has shared the first photo of her husband and Australian TV legend Bert Newton since his lifesaving leg amputation.
Following Monday’s shock announcement that the 82-year-old had undergone major surgery on Saturday after complications from an infected toe, the grandfather appeared to be in good spirits.
Patti posted a photo of her husband of 46 years propped up in his hospital bed with his youngest grandson Alby, who shares an uncanny resemblance to the TV personality.
“Thank you everyone for your prayers and beautiful words. Think Alby has stolen Bert’s hair piece,” Patti wrote.
Home and Away’s Penny McNamee and former ALF player Brendan Fevola were among the many people wishing the four-time Logie winner a quick recovery.
Following the surgery at Epworth Hospital, Patti told reporters her husband was in “really good spirits” but had a big recovery ahead of him.
“But you know Bert, onward and upward and I’m sure he will be fine,” she said.
“We’re hoping, anyway. We’re saying lots of prayers, hoping everyone is saying lots of prayers.”
In recent years Bert has been battling a number of health conditions, including diabetes. He had a quadruple heart bypass in 2012 and has been hospitalised a number or times with pneumonia.
Entertainment reporter Peter Ford said the below-the-knee amputation was “life or death” decision.
“It got worse … he was seeing doctors and specialists and they couldn’t seem to get it right, it kept on spreading. Basically he was told last week, you have a couple of months to live, or if you have your leg amputated, you’ll probably have a few years. So, he agreed to have the leg amputated on Saturday,” Ford told The Morning Rush.
“It’s a big decision for anyone to make, but it’s also a practical thing, because they live in a two-storey place with the bedrooms and the bathrooms upstairs, so they’re now having to convert the house downstairs because Patti doesn’t want him to go into a nursing home.
“They said, ‘We had a choice. Other people don’t have a choice. Bert wants to keep on living, because he adores Patti, his children and his grandkids, and he wants to have as much time as he can with them’.”
