Euphoria special bridge episodes to hit streaming on Binge - NEWS.com.au

It’s been a long year for fans of Euphoria but a special new episode is about to drop within days.

The critically acclaimed HBO drama aired its first season last year with the second season delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But the cast has filmed two “bridge episodes” to treat viewers to a taste of what’s to come before the official series drops at a later date.

Due to hit Binge on Monday, the special “Rue” episode picks up where the finale left off, with this year’s Emmy-award winner Zendaya returning as the titular character.

Rue Bennett is seen sitting in a diner as she has flashbacks of the finale when she decided not to run away with the woman she loves, Jules (Hunter Schafer), which seemingly led her to relapse.

The trailer ends with Rue’s sponsor Ali (Colman Domingo) pulling her out of her trance and asking, “Why’d you call me?”

The gripping finale certainly left fans with more questions than answers, with the dark musical ending leading some viewers to believe Rue had overdosed and died.

Zendaya, 24, earlier said there was “a beautiful second season” that had been written.

“But in order to do it the way we want to do it, we need to wait until it’s safer,” she said.

Created by Sam Levinson, Euphoria follows a group of high school students “as they navigate love and friendships in a world of drugs, sex, trauma and social media,” per the show’s official plot.

RELATED: Euphoria shocks with extremely graphic content

Following the debut episode in June last year, Parents Television Council president Tim Winter warned in a press release: “HBO, with its new high school centred show Euphoria, appears to be overtly, intentionally, marketing extremely graphic adult content – sex, violence, profanity and drug use – to teens and preteens.”

Binge executive director Alison Hurbert-Burns has said Euphoria was one of the most popular shows on its streaming service.

Euphoria is one of the biggest hits of the year and has established a huge cult following here in Australia. It’s consistently one of the most popular titles on Binge,” she said.

“Brought to life with exceptional performances, including from Emmy-award winner Zendaya, Euphoria is compelling viewing and we can’t wait to provide fans with these special episodes before what’s set to be a captivating season two.”

The new episode drops on Binge on Monday, with the second special episode to debut in January.

Ice-T slammed for savagely calling out sick father-in-law - NEWS.com.au

American rapper and actor Ice-T has shared a brutal photo of his father-in-law online, revealing that his older relative was a COVID-19 sceptic — until he himself was struck down with the potentially deadly virus.

Law and Order star Ice-T, 62, revealed that his wife Coco Austin’s father “was a serious ‘No Masker’.”

COVID hit him. Pneumonia in both lungs. 40 days in ICU close to death. Now he’s on Oxygen indefinitely. Ohhh he’s a Believer now #COVIDisNotAGame,” Ice-T captioned the close-up photo of his father-in-law, laying in a hospital bed with an oxygen mask on his face:

It’s unclear whether Ice-T’s father-in-law had OKed him sending the tweet to his 1.8m followers. The savage tweet prompted a mixed reaction from those on social media, with some applauding him for highlighting the seriousness of a disease that has so far killed more than 274,000 Americans.

“If you think you’re immune from COVID, believe me you’re not. This virus is unpredictable and if you’re the unlucky one then it will RIP through your lungs and have you looking like Coco’s dad on oxygen,” wrote an ER doctor.

“It’s hell when you have to learn the hard way!” said another person.

But others slammed Ice-T for appearing to revel in his father-in-law’s misfortune:

“What would cause somebody to post something like this? It totally reads like schadenfreude on your own father in law. Plenty of ‘pro-maskers’ have met the same or worse fates. We don’t celebrate ppl getting sick so we can have our ‘told you so’ moment. That’s your FAMILY. Gross,” wrote one person.

“Quite possibly the most whack tweet I ever read,” said another.

And another: “This is cold af.”

“This is tremendously disrespectful to family,” wrote another.

Ice-T’s tweet comes as the US approaches 14 million coronavirus cases, by far the most of any country in the world. Despite the deadly virus now running out of control in each of the 50 US states, there is still widespread resistance to wearing masks and taking other simple health measures to limit the spread.

Sunrise's Sam Mac gets VERY friendly with Today show reporter as they crash each other's broadcasts - Daily Mail

Fancy seeing you here! Sunrise weather presenter Sam Mac gets VERY friendly with a Today show reporter as the rival breakfast shows CRASH each other's live broadcasts while reporting on Queensland's border reopening

The breakfast TV ratings war between Channel Seven's Sunrise and the Nine Network's Today show has been raging for years.

And on Tuesday, the fierce rivalry played out on live television during a hilarious on-camera showdown between Sunrise weatherman Sam Mac and Today presenter Aislin Kriukelis.

Sam and Aislin were both broadcasting live from Brisbane Airport, interviewing domestic travellers arriving in Queensland for the first time since the state's borders were reopened.

In a scene reminiscent of a Hollywood comedy, Sam began playfully swooping into Aislin's shots and ambushing her interviews with travellers.

At one stage, the 38-year-old even attempted to hijack the blonde's interview with a young female passenger by grabbing Aislin's microphone and yelling, 'Welcome back to the Today show!'

The rival hosts later took a few good-natured jabs at each other during a rather flirty on-air exchange.

'Sorry, I didn't get your name before. I actually didn't mean to get in your shot,' Sam said with a devilish smile.

Taking the situation in good humour, Aislin giggled and playfully slapped Sam's shoulder - before suddenly realising she was still being filmed.

'Are we live on the TV? Oh, are we doing a live cross?' she yelped, turning to the Sunrise camera crew.

'I love games!' The rival hosts later took a few good-natured jabs at each other during a rather flirty on-air exchange

'But your mic isn't plugged in, so I win,' singleton Sam teased.

'This is a two-camera shoot! I have dreamt of a two-camera shoot... Um, I'm sorry about butting in before, but you butt in first. Just a little bit of payback,' he joked.

Responding with her own tongue-in-cheek jab, Aislin, who is married with children, declared: 'Hey, Sam! Welcome to Queensland. Let the games begin.'

'Oh... I love games,' Sam coquettishly replied, before hurriedly wrapping up the conversation by saying: 'Okay! This is getting weird.'

‘Car crash’ TV segment as Sunrise and Today reporters clash at Brisbane Airport - NEWS.com.au

There were farcical scenes on TV this morning as reporters from rival breakfast shows jostled to get interviews with Qantas passengers arriving in Brisbane.

Sunrise weatherman Sam Mac and Today show reporter Aislin Kriukelis were both live on air as passengers disembarked from the first Qantas flight from Sydney to Brisbane after the border between Queensland and New South Wales opened this morning.

Both presenters were hoping to capture emotional scenes of loved ones being reunited for the first time since March, but instead the first few people they both spoke to were workers who hadn’t been affected by the border closures.

When the duelling reporters spotted a dad being reunited with his wife and daughter, they both pounced and started asking questions of the startled family at the same time.

“There’s nothing like a special family moment shared with 14 camera crews and a random weather guy,” Mac joked.

The TV personalities quickly moved on and spoke to more bewildered passengers.

At one stage Mac referenced the awkward battle with the Today show reporter, saying: “I feel this lady is trying to get in, I don’t know her name, but I feel like she’s cutting my gig.”

Mac then jumped in front of Kriukelis twice as she was conducting interviews, much to the amusement of Kochie and Sam who were watching on in the Sunrise studio.

At one stage, Kriukelis started interviewing Big Brother personality Mike Goldman who was one of the passengers.

But Mac quickly cut in, saying to Goldman, “You’re Channel 7, right?”

“Ah, yes, I am,” Goldman replied, as he stopped talking to Kriukelis and started chatting to Mac.

After a quick interview with Goldman, Mac quipped: “You’re a legend, mate, I’ve got to keep running because she’s stealing my interviews.”

As the Today and Sunrise segments dragged on, both reporters continued to chat to passengers coming off the plane but they weren’t having much luck.

“Is this a special day,” Mac asked one woman.

“It’s actually a sad day, I’m here for my auntie’s funeral,” she replied.

After seven long minutes of live TV and with no more passengers coming off the plane, both Mac and Kriukelis threw back to their respective hosts in the studio.

“This is the best ever!” Karl Stefanovic chuckled on Today.

“Duelling breakfast shows; that was very funny!” Kochie said on Sunrise.

Cate Blanchett-produced mini series Stateless and Shannon Murphy's feature film directing debut Babyteeth dominated proceedings at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards (AACTA Awards).

At a ceremony on Monday night at The Star in Sydney, immigration drama Stateless grabbed 13 awards including best telefeature or miniseries, best screenplay in television and all four acting awards across television drama. Neither Russell Crowe, recently named as president of AACTA, nor Nicole Kidman, appointed as VP, were able to attend.

Crowe however sent a video message that encouraged ambition, spoke of green shoots both after the wildfires and the COVID crisis, and hope that the recent production sector recovery can be made sustainable.

"I want to encourage the federal government to use this time to set a platform so this rise in production can be facilitated to continue. Given the right support, the screen industry can be used as a powerful driver of economic recovery," Crowe said.

The results on Monday were closely aligned with the AACTA Industry awards presented on Friday in a wider selection of craft categories. Then Stateless picked up six AACTA Industry prizes, and Babyteeth two.

While Australia-China political relations currently plumb new depths, AACTA gave two prizes to Chinese films. Better Days was named best Asian film, and The Eight Hundred won for best VFX, much of which was provided by Australian firm Rising Sun.

Just days after police took out an apprehended violence order against him, Jodi Gordon's new boyfriend, Sebastian Blacker, was spotted returning to her Sydney home.

The British investment portfolio manager appeared tense as he pulled what looked like a black garment bag from the backseat of a car.

Leaning into the backseat of the vehicle, Sebastian pulled the bag out, before shutting the car door and walking towards the house.

Neighbours had reported screaming at the home, before police rushed to the scene where they interviewed a man believed to be Sebastian.

Reports confirm police stayed at Jodi's property for several hours, then issued Sebastian with an AVO preventing him from stalking, harassing or intimidating her.

Sebastian is also prohibited from damaging Jodi's property, and cannot physically approach Jodi for at least 12 hours after drinking alcohol or taking illicit drugs.

Aleeia, Jodi's six-year-old daughter from her marriage to retired NRL star Braith Anasta, is not believed to have been present at the time of the disturbance.

The matter between the couple will be heard at Sydney's Downing Centre Court on Thursday, December 3.

Laverne Cox’s horrific transphobic attack detailed in Instagram video - NEWS.com.au

Orange Is The New Black star and LGBTQ+ advocate Laverne Coxtook to social media on Sunday to detail the transphobic attack she and her friend fell victim to, which left her “in shock”.

In an IGTV video, the star went on to explain that she went on a socially-distance walk in Los Angeles with a friend at Griffith Park, soon encountering a man who aggressively asked them what the time was.

“The friend that I’m with looks at his watch and tells him the time, and then the guy who asked for the time says to my friend: ‘Guy or girl?’” Cox said.

“My friend says, ‘F**k off.’”

As Cox explains, the man went on to attack her friend, hitting him on several occasions.

“I look back and I’m like ‘What is happening?’ The guy is like hitting my friend, and then my friend is going toward him and I’m like ‘Holy s**t!’” Cox said. “I pull out my phone and I call to dial 911, and all of a sudden it’s over and the guy is gone.”

Once Cox and her friend had enough time to process the incident, they went on to think that the man wanted Cox to answer the question about the time.

“The guy really wanted me to answer so that he could spook whether I’m trans or not,” Cox said. “I don’t know why, I don’t know why it matters. At the end of the day, it’s like who cares? I’m in a hoodie and yoga pants, I’m completely covered up, I’ve got my mask on — who cares if I’m trans? How does this affect your life?”

The actress was so shaken up by the incident, saying it reminded her of how unsafe the world really is.

In 2020 alone, 28 transgender people have been killed, which surpasses the total of last year, as the National Centre for Transgender Equality reports.

“It’s not safe in the world. And I don’t like to think about that a lot, but it’s the truth,” Cox said. “It’s the truth and it’s not safe if you’re a trans person. Obviously, I know this well. It’s just really sad.”

RELATED: Laverne Cox: ‘I’m no role model’

Cox continued: “It doesn’t matter who you are. You can be Laverne Cox, you know, or whatever that means. If you’re trans … you’re going to experience stuff like this.”

Ending the video, Cox encouraged people to not blame themselves if something similar ever happens to them.

“When these things happen, it’s not your fault. It’s not your fault that people are not cool with you existing in the world … We have a right to walk in the park.”

The star was inundated with support from her fans after uploading the video.

Director Lee Daniels wrote, “Stay strong beautiful sister.”

Kerry Washington commented, “Woman!!!!!!!! Ugh. I am so sorry. Love you.”

Police take out AVO for Jodi Gordon against new boyfriend Sebastian Blackler - NEWS.com.au

NSW Police have taken out a provisional apprehended violence order out on behalf ex-Neighbours star Jodi Gordon.

NSW Police are also investigating an allegation of domestic violence against Gordon, after being called to her apartment in Double Bay last week.

NSW Police took out the preliminary AVO against her new boyfriend Sebastian Blackler, an investment portfolio manager following an incident early Friday morning.

“Around 12.30am on Friday 27 November 2020, officers were called to a unit at Wiston Gardens at Double Bay,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“Officers from Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command have commenced an investigation into an alleged domestic violence incident involving a 35-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man,” the statement continues.

The standard conditions of the provisional apprehended violence order bans Blackler from approaching Gordon, former wife of former NRL player Braith Anasta, after 12 hours following drinking alcohol or taking illicit drugs.

Other conditions, state Blackler must not assault or threaten, stalk, harass or intimidate Gordon, or intentionally or recklessly destroy or damage any property that belongs to or is in her possession.

Blackler has not been charged with any offence.

Gordon revealed her new boyfriend in an Instagram post earlier in November, captioning her post with “When life gets wonderful …” alongside a silver heart emoji.

Gordon, who is most famous for her stint on Home And Away from 2005-2010 recently left her role as Elly Conway on Neighbours after four years on set.

She was also the centre of a major police operation in 2009 where she was found hiding in the bedroom of former bikie associate Mark Judge, after her then-boyfriend Ryan Stokes reported her missing.

Judge had called police for assistance because he thought armed gunmen were attempting to break into his apartment, which resulted in a heavy police response.

Gordon shares a six-year-old daughter with former Rooster’s and State of Origin star Braith Anasta.

The matter will be heard before a magistrate at Downing Centre Local Court on December 3.

Gordon or Blackler could not be reached for comment.

AACTA Awards: Here's who rocked the red carpet at The Star Sydney - ABC News

The 10th annual Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards, known as the AACTA Awards, got underway today with not one but two reduced-capacity COVID-friendly sessions.

The film section kicked off at The Star Sydney, with actors walking the red carpet before being seated inside at socially distanced tables.

The TV awards will be handed out at a second event this evening.

The outfits were fairly subdued this year, with many opting for simple lines and colours. Black was the stand-out choice of hue for men and women, with simple accessories dominating.

Bec Hewitt shares photo of her ‘mini-me’ daughter Mia for her 15th birthday - NEWS.com.au

Bec Hewitt’s eldest daughter Mia is looking more and more like her mother every day.

On Sunday, Hewitt posted a rare photo of her daughter with a tribute in honour of her 15th birthday.

“Happy Birthday to my style icon! @miarebeccaofficial,” she captioned the Instagram post. “15 today!”

Bec’s tennis star husband Lleyton Hewitt also wished his daughter a happy birthday on her special day, writing, “Happy 15th B’day to my beautiful girl @miarebeccaofficial #ProudParents.”

Bec and Mia spent a lot of time together last year in July attending many fashion events.

At the time, the pair shared one photo at a Dior show where fans noticed how similar the mother-daughter duo were starting to look.

“@dior Thank you for the most magical two days! So inspired!#dior #fashion #paris #haute couture #30montaigne,” the actress captioned one post.

Back in November 2018, Bec opened up on how close she is with her daughter and the special bond they shared.

“I’m a real believer that our kids are here to teach us as much as we teach them!” she wrote in an Instagram post honouring Mia’s 13th birthday.

“I am always learning from Mia! How to be patient, how to be positive and how to be a better person. She is beyond her years! Such a kind, gentle, intelligent, calm yet bubbly person to be around!”

Bec and Lleyton share daughters Mia, Ava, 10, and son Cruz, 11.

In 2016, the pair’s daughters hit the runway at the Melbourne Fashion Festival.

Bec Hewitt looked on proudly as Mia, then aged 10, tried her hand at modelling, alongside younger sister Ava.

It was the second time the young sisters had walked the runway for the Fashion Festival, which attracted fashion lovers from across the world.

The year prior, the pair were enlisted to help showcase Target’s autumn collection.

In an interview on The Project, Lleyton said that Mia had similar ambitions to her mother, who is a former actress and singer.

“My daughter is already following in my wife’s footsteps. She’s the actress and entertainer. She wants to be in all the drama programs already.”

The most annoying people post-COVID who don’t realise how lucky they are - NEWS.com.au

When we arrived at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion I was immediately excited.

The last time I’d gone there to see Tash Sultana there - or any musician for that matter - there was massive lines to get in and the usual big crowd of people.

It’s a 5500-capacity venue but the Aussie artist’s gig on Saturday night - her only performance of the year - was for 1000.

That meant you walked straight in, immediately got a drink at the bar, and didn’t have to jostle for floor space.

But it seemed that wasn’t enough for some people in this post coronavirus lockdown world.

As soon as we stepped into the tiny line to get our bags checked and security was reminding people to socially distance and stand in a single file, there was eye-rolling and whingeing.

One lady - who didn’t look like she was getting kicked out for being too drunk - was already being told to leave the venue.

Once we got inside and people still didn’t realise you had to stand on the large yellow dots to keep distanced in the bar queue, there was more complaining.

When a guard again asked people to stay on the dots, the lady behind us said, “This is ridiculous. What happens when we’re in line at Coles?!”

I don’t know what that woman’s been doing at supermarkets but there are markers on the floor there too you’re supposed to stand on. Cue my own eye roll.

Another group of particularly douchey guys walked past a staff member and said, “Oh, so you’re the marshall?” and she told them she was actually a security guard. Not that a COVID marshal is not as important, as if that’s what they were suggesting.

In my opinion the best part about gigs now is you can sit down - and you don’t have anyone either side of you.

You’re not getting knocked around, having sweat flung on you or drinks spilt on you.

While for the most part this concept went smoothly, we still had one particularly inconsiderate woman rush past us and knock our drinks over, not giving us time to move them or adjust our legs for her.

I have to admit among all this, even we broke the rules. At one point towards the end of the - what can only be described as a phenomenal show - everyone was itching to stand up and slowly groups of people did.

I suppose everyone figured if the whole crowd did it, how were they going to tell everyone to sit down?

I felt like a naughty school student doing the wrong thing and at first I couldn’t bring myself to do it. Eventually I did and I have to say for those few minutes we were swaying around, it felt amazing being able to briefly dance again.

The security guards sure enough got around and told everyone to sit back done, and they did so very kindly.

They were also helped by Tash who said while she appreciated everyone’s enthusiasm they had to sit down or the show would be cut.

The thing about 2020 is everyone gets it - generally. They know we’re desperate to have a good time and feel normal again - but they know they don’t want to be responsible for a virus outbreak.

It’s a shame not everyone is on the same page.

And after a year that’s been marred by so much tragedy and heartbreak, this kind of show was what 2020 really needed.

As someone on YouTube pointed out, “The people at this show are some of the luckiest people alive at the moment”.

I certainly felt like one of them, and I think people forget that sentiment as others in much tougher situations or lockdowns across the world livestreamed the performance from their couch.

The “epic” performance nearly didn’t go ahead - Tash lost her voice early in the week and was going to have to cancel.

After practising in front of her dog at home all year, this would have been devastating, but of course she prevailed.

“I waited all year patiently for this one night,” she wrote on Instagram afterwards.

“I rehearsed every single day for months. This room was more than I could have ever dreamed last night, I can’t believe I played a real show with real people this year.

“Thank you everyone for your energy and genuine love and support. I felt every single one of you and I hope you felt my spirit too.”

Her energy on stage was electric and the entire room - and everyone at home - was captivated.

The show was part of the Great Southern Nights series of concerts around NSW that’s bringing live music back to venues and what a treat it’s been.

It was actually Tash’s last solo performance before she releases her new album in February, when she’ll have more people on stage with her.

“Just wait until you see what I have in store for you,” she told the crowd.

I know I can’t wait for 2021.

Erica Mallet Confirms She & Sally Are No Longer Working Together After Leaving Triple J Behind - Pedestrian TV

Former Triple J breakfast host Erica Mallett has finally broken her silence since leaving the network, clarifying that the duo didn’t get axed, but her and Sally Coleman have come to the end of their journey together.

Mallett took to Instagram to share her side of the story in a lengthy post on Sunday.

“I know I’ve been a bit quiet lately. I wanted to let you guys know first-hand what’s been going on and needed some time to gather myself before I did,” she began the post.

“The first thing I want to say is that Sally and Erica didn’t get axed from Triple J. In fact, the show was doing really well,” she said.

“We were getting great feedback across the board – from management and our listeners. Until recently, we were all planning for a 2021 where Sally and Erica would grow and grow.”

But after clarifying that the duo were not axed from the station, she asserted that personally, she wanted to continue.

“I wanted breaky to continue. I really did, with my whole heart,” Mallett said.

However, she then went on to explain that although the radio duo were doing great, Sally and Erica (the people) were sort of at the end of their journey as a pair.

“Unfortunately, the reality was that although Sally and Erica – the show was going great guns, Sally and Erica – the people were coming to the natural conclusion of their 8-year creative ride together,” she wrote.

For those of you who may not know, Sally and Erica also released music together as Coda Conduct. However, it appears that in addition to Triple J breakfast being done, Coda Conduct *probably* is too.

On a positive note, Mallett confirmed that she’ll still be releasing music and writing, as well as a number of new creative things.

“I’m dipping my toes into areas that excite me and I have ideas pouring out so quick I can’t always catch them,” she said.

The news comes as their replacements Bryce & Ebony were announced this morning.

Sally is yet to release a statement.

West Wing star Richard Schiff’s grim warning after coronavirus battle - NEWS.com.au

“You don’t want to get this thing,” actor Richard Schiff of The West Wing said of his recent close call with COVID-19.

“Listen to what I’m saying,” a sombre, gaunt-looking Schiff told viewers during an appearance on MSNBC’s The Last Word over the weekend.

“You don’t have to get to the point where I am – being told that I might not be here next week – to appreciate the people you love,” Schiff said.

“And if you really love them you will take the steps to prevent this disease from getting to those who you love, and from getting to you,” he told fellow West Wing alum and The Last Word host Lawrence O’Donnell.

Schiff and his wife, Sheila Kelley, were diagnosed with COVID-19 on US Election Day while in Vancouver, where he was filming The Good Doctor.

His wife’s symptoms were minor, but Schiff had to be admitted to Vancouver General Hospital and treated with antiviral drug remdesivir, steroids and oxygen support, he tweeted mid-month.

Schiff is home now, and O’Donnell invited him on his show this week to share some surprise Thanksgiving well-wishes from his former West Wing cast mates.

“There’s a few friends of yours who you shared a locker room with for seven years who have a few words for you,” O’Donnell told Schiff, who broke into a smile as the taped greetings rolled by.

“We’re so happy and relieved that you’re on the mend,” said Martin Sheen, who played President Josiah Bartlet to Schiff’s White House communications director Toby Ziegler on the long-running TV series.

“We have that much more to be grateful for,” Sheen said.

“Yay, Richard! I love you so much. I’m so glad you’re out of the woods,” Allison Janney said in her greeting, blowing Schiff a kiss.

COVID is nothing to play with – you had us concerned there for a while,” said Dule Hill.

“I love you so much and I’m so relieved you’re OK,” Janel Moloney said.

“We are all so grateful this thanksgiving that you are out of the hospital and on the mend,” Bradley Whitford said.

“We love you, brother, and thank you for using your terrifying experience to get the word out to everybody about how dangerous this disease is and how careful we need to be this holiday season.

“I cannot wait for the day when I can throw my arms around you and tell you I love you in person,” Whitford added.

Schiff was clearly touched.

“They’re amazing people,” he told O’Donnell.

“It’s like having a family, and you go back for Thanksgiving dinner, and there are no fights. We just love each other unconditionally and it’s just great.”

Schiff told O’Donnell that people need to remain COVID-cautious for just a few more months.

Referencing the vaccines and new president on the horizon, he said: “We’re in a new hopeful time.

“We have some hope coming down the road,” he said.

“Hold the line. Don’t get this now. Do not get this now. And encourage everyone around you, those who you love, to keep it at bay and help others keep it at bay.

“You don’t want to get this thing,” he stressed.

Triple j announces new breakfast hosts - NEWS.com.au

Triple J has announced who will host the station’s breakfast show in 2021.

Bryce Mills and Ebony Boadu will take over triple j breakfast next January after Sally Coleman and Erica Mallett quit on November 17.

Mills, who has been hosting triple j Weekend Arvos this year, said in a statement: “I was in high school when I decided that I wanted to one day host triple j Breakfast. It was pretty arrogant of me to make that declaration during maths class with absolutely no idea how I’d get to triple j, but here we are!

“I can’t tell you how proud and excited I am to start this new role and get to know triple j listeners on an even deeper level.”

Ebony Boadu, an accomplished DJ who has performed at Falls Festival and Splendour In The Grass, added: “Over the past two years I’ve had the most incredible time spending my Saturday nights DJing and partying with people all over the country. I’ve been so humbled and grateful for that opportunity alone, but to now be able to wake up with triple j listeners and hang out every single day in my dream workplace is still something I’m trying to fully process.

“I’m so stoked to have the opportunity to share my favourite new songs, talk to artists that I admire and make 1000s of new friends every morning!”

Mills will host triple j Brekkie for the remainder of the year, while new presenters for House Party and Weekend Arvos will be announced in early 2021.

Aussie series ‘The End’ to premiere February 2021 - NEWS.com.au

The trailer has dropped for a gripping new Australian drama that will explore the contentious topic of voluntary dying.

Foxtel’s 10-part series The End will premiere on February 2, and stars Dame Harriet Walter (Succession, The Crown) as Edie Henley – who feels strongly about her right to die.

The Missing star Frances O’Connor plays Edie’s daughter Dr. Kate Brennan, who is regularly confronted with the topic of voluntary euthanasia in her line of work and is opposed to it.

Queensland-based Kate then ships Edie from her home in England and forces her into a local retirement village to keep an eye on her.

Amid fighting a sensitive battle with her mother, Kate’s dealing with her own struggles with an ex in jail, and her children, one of whom is a teenage trans boy, navigating their respective paths.

“Foxtel is committed to telling Australian stories for Australian audiences and we are very proud of The End, a series which is bound to spark a national conversation,” Foxtel Executive Director of Television Brian Walsh said.

“At times confronting and yes, controversial, it is a series which is incredibly moving and emotional, but above all, entertaining. I think audiences will relate to every character and we can’t wait for it to debut in February.”

Mr Walsh added: “The End is a multi-generational family series which deals with life and death and everything in between.”

The show also stars Brooke Satchwell, Luke Arnold and John Waters.

A co-production between Foxtel and Sky UK, the series – which was filmed on the Gold Coast – was created and written by Samantha Strauss and is directed by Jessica M. Thompson and Jonathan Brough.

In Australia, voluntary assisted dying is legal in Victoria in limited circumstances.

Laws have also been passed in Western Australia and will commence on July 1.

It is not lawful in any other Australian states or territories but the option to die is a major discussion point with several states introducing Bills into Parliaments recently.

Fact or fiction? British government says The Crown should be clear - Sydney Morning Herald

Britain's Culture Minister thinks the Netflix TV series The Crown should come with a disclaimer: It's a work of fiction.

Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden weighed in amid criticism of the historical liberties taken by the drama about the British royal family.

Emma Corrin plays Princess Diana in the hit Netflix series The Crown.

"It's a beautifully produced work of fiction. So as with other TV productions, Netflix should be very clear at the beginning it is just that," Dowden told the Mail on Sunday newspaper. "Without this, I fear a generation of viewers who did not live through these events may mistake fiction for fact."

Dowden is expected to write to Netflix this week to express his view. Netflix did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Questions of historical fidelity were not a major issue during earlier seasons of the show, which debuted in 2016 and traces the long reign of Queen Elizabeth II, which began in 1952.

But the current fourth season is set in the 1980s, a divisive decade that many Britons remember vividly. Characters include Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, whose 11-year tenure transformed and divided Britain, and the late Princess Diana, whose death in a car crash in 1997 traumatised the nation.

Former royal press secretary Dickie Arbiter has called the series a "hatchet job" on Prince Charles, the heir to the British throne, and his first wife Diana. The troubled relationship of the couple, played by Josh O'Connor and Emma Corrin, is a major storyline in the series.

Diana's brother, Charles Spencer, has also said the show should carry a notice that "this isn't true but it is based around some real events."

"I worry people do think that this is gospel and that’s unfair," he told broadcaster ITV.

Some conservatives have criticised the program's depiction of Thatcher, played by Gillian Anderson. Britain's first female prime minister, who died in 2013, is portrayed as clashing with Olivia Colman's Elizabeth to an extent that some say is exaggerated.

The Crown creator Peter Morgan, whose work also includes recent-history dramas The Queen and Frost/Nixon, has defended his work, saying it is thoroughly researched and true in spirit.

In a 2017 discussion of The Crown, Morgan said "you sometimes have to forsake accuracy, but you must never forsake truth".

Steven Fielding, a professor of political history at the University of Nottingham, said the suggestion that The Crown carry a disclaimer was "reasonable and yet pointless".

"It invariably doesn't have an effect," he said. "There are studies that show that people believe fiction when it’s presented as fact — even if you tell them it’s not fact."

Fielding said it was no surprise that Charles and his allies were annoyed with the heir to the throne's depiction as "a bit of an idiot". But he said making a fuss about it only amplifies the attention.

Historians are used to railing at inaccuracies in dramas such as the Academy Award-winning Darkest Hour, which included an invented scene of Winston Churchill meeting ordinary Londoners on an Underground Tube train during World War II.

"Mixing historical fact and fiction has been around since Shakespeare. This is not new to films, it’s not new to TV," said Fielding, co-author of The Churchill Myths, which examines Britain's wartime leader in popular culture.

"I don't recall the culture secretary complaining about the ridiculous presentation of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, he said. "Because it went with the myth, with the idea of Churchill the hero, nobody complained."

"Nobody's bothered if fact and fiction are all mangled up, so long as it’s saying nice things," he added.
