An Aussie radio star has opened up about his disastrous interview with singer Amy Shark.
Jack Post co-hosts The Christian O’Connell Show on Melbourne’s Gold 104.3. He also has a new podcast series called Jacky Road Studios where he interviews celebrities and then writes and performs a song at the end of each episode that is inspired by the interview.
But Jack revealed on radio that he will forever be scarred by his recent interview with Amy Shark after he forgot to hit record.
“I recorded my first guest that I went through official channels to secure,” he said. “I went through Sony Music to get an interview with Amy Shark.
“They gave me 45 minutes which was great. It was a great interview, I was so happy with it. But at the end of the interview when I went to say goodbye, I went to stop the recording … (I realised) I never pressed record on the whole interview.”
Jack had only recorded his side of the audio, meaning there was only 45 minutes of his questions and his reactions to Amy’s answers.
Jack realised the error at the end of the interview and can be heard saying to Amy: “Cool, thank you so much for doing that … um … oh f**k … sh*t … holy sh*t … oh dude, I f***ing didn’t record it!”
News.com.au understands Amy later saved the day - as a precaution she had recorded her side of the audio and sent it to Jack to use for his podcast.
Christian O’Connell told Jack on Gold 104.3 that the interview incident will “scar you permanently” – and recalled when something similar happened to him 10 years ago with Ricky Gervais.
“Ricky does all these amazing stories – he starts talking about his working class background and he’s talking about how hard his mum worked and that she put aside some money every month so he got a surprise present of a wooden tennis racquet,” Christian explained. “He said it meant so much to him … he slept with it for a couple of days in his bed.
“As he’s talking about this he’s welling up, he’s crying. And I’m thinking, ‘I’m gonna win every award!’”
But then Christian looked at the recording machine and realised he was only recording his audio, not Ricky’s.
“I froze,” the radio star said. “I’m scared to tell Ricky. We carry on for another 45 minutes!”
To make matters worse, when the interview ended, Ricky told Christian: “That was my favourite interview.”
“I can’t even look him in the eye,” Christian recalled.
He later emailed Ricky and told him about the error and it took the comedian a week to reply.
“It scarred me so badly that I killed the entire podcast (series),” Christian said on air.
He’s since interviewed Ricky many times since, and every single time The Office star starts by saying, “Are you recording this?”
Jack and Christian aren’t the only radio stars who’ve forgot to record an interview.
Fox FM’s Fifi, Fev and Byron executive producer Leon Sjogren wrote on Jack’s Instagram page: “10 mins into a 15 min exclusive interview with Chris Martin from Coldplay and I realised I hadn’t pressed record.”
Byron Cooke added: “I know of an audio producer on his first day on the job … his breakfast show interviewed the Rolling Stones in their hotel room … he realises when he gets back to station it hadn’t recorded.”
A former producer of the SAFM breakfast show added that they flew one of their hosts to Sydney to interview Jerry Seinfeld for Bee Movie only to realise once they were back in South Australia they hadn’t recorded the comedian’s audio.
