'Too great a risk': Caloundra music festival to be 'discontinued' for good after cancellation in April - 9News

The Caloundra Music Festival, which usually takes place annually on the Sunshine Coast, has been discontinued due to rising costs, falling ticket sales and general uncertainty in the music industry.

Organisers of the local council-backed festival had confirmed in April that the event would take a break from its usual October dates.

Today, the Sunshine Coast Council announced in their 2024-2025 budget that the festival would no longer be funded by the council.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli said the decision to pull the plug on the festival for good was very difficult.

"Rising costs, falling ticket sales and uncertainty in the music festival industry were felt to be too great a risk in the current climate," Natoli said.

"We recognise that music events are important for our community and Council will continue to deliver smaller events and programs."

The organisers had already announced that the 2024 edition of the festival would not go ahead.

By cancelling the 2024 event, the council had hoped the festival could go ahead in 2025.

But the council's latest budget has forced organisers to pull the plug.

A statement on the Sunshine Coast Council website said that patrons are increasingly choosing to support major artist tours and genre-specific festival line-ups, instead of more general programs.

The council had boasted line-ups with the likes of Missy Higgins, Empire of the Sun, The Veronicas, Powderfinger and Angus and Julia Stone.

It had been named the 2023 People's Choice Award for Festival of the Year by the Queensland Music Awards.

Caloundra Music Festival is the latest festival in the last two years to call it quits over cost of living pressures following Splendour in the Grass, Groovin' in the Moo, Coastal Jam, Vintage Vibes, Dark Mofo and Valleyways.
