The lawyer for Justin Timberlake has broken his silence after the pop star’s arrest for drunk driving.
Ed Burke, who is representing the singer, made comments about the case on Wednesday, US time.
They come as CCTV footage was released of what is purported to be Timberlake driving before the 43-year-old was taken into custody after the vehicle allegedly swerved across the road in the ritzy Hamptons area of Long Island just after midnight.
Timberlake had been with friends at a restaurant in Sag Harbor, about 160km west of New York City.
He was held overnight in a cell and released without bail following a court appearance where he was charged with one count of driving while intoxicated. He also received notifications of traffic violations for failing to halt at a stop sign and a failure to keep to the right side of the road.
According to the report written by the arresting officer, Timberlake “was operating said vehicle in an intoxicated condition in that his eyes were bloodshot and glassy, a strong odour of an alcoholic beverage was emanating from his breath, he was unable to divide attention, he had slowed speech, he was unsteady afoot, and he performed poorly on all standardised field sobriety tests”.
Lawyer speaks
On Wednesday, Mr Burke said he “looked forward to vigorously defending Mr Timberlake on these allegations”.
“I will have a lot to say at the appropriate time but am currently awaiting full discovery from the District Attorney’s office.”
Discovery is where lawyers get to see all the documentation relating to the case, such as from police.
Video of Timberlake allegedly driving
CCTV has now emerged of Timberlake’s BMW driving down the road in the town of Sag Harbor.
The SUV can be seen on a quiet Main Street after midnight in the well to-do village.
The video doesn’t show any obvious dangerous driving.
The singer will face court again on July 26.
One punishment he received immediately however was the indignity of not being recognised.
The New York Post reported that the officer who pulled Timberlake over was “so young that he didn’t even know” who Timberlake was, even when told his name.
“He didn’t recognise him or his name,” the insider claimed.
It’s also alleged that Timberlake’s first concerns during his arrest were about his current tour, which started in the US in April and will move to Europe next month.
It’s claimed Timberlake said under his breath, ‘This is going to ruin the tour.’ The policeman reportedly asked ‘What tour?’ to which the pop star replied “The world tour.”
