David and Victoria Beckham are no strangers to playing dirty, with the power couple becoming so estranged that they fed negative stories about each other to the media, an author claims.
The “media war” was sparked eight years ago after allegations emerged of David engaging in an affair with his personal assistant Rebeccas Loos.
The relationship between the Beckhams then continued to sour so badly that it became simply a “distant business relationship”, British author Tom Bower said prior to the release of the book The House of Beckham.
One particular moment of contention between the couple occurred in 2018 when David appeared on The Sunday Project and called their marriage “hard work”. Victoria hadn’t been given a heads up about what would be spoken about during the interview, and Bower said she was left in “disbelief” upon watching it.
“It was like a nuclear bomb had gone off,” Bower told The Mirror.
“Her husband’s disloyalty baffled her. His truthfulness had destroyed her efforts to conjure up an image of happy families. Why, she sobbed, would David embarrass her?
“Worse still, why could he not understand the consequence of his own stupidity? Why, she wailed, had he become the enemy of her ambition? Without any answers, she fled to a Baden-Baden spa hotel for two days.”
The author claims that Victoria’s publicist then leaked a story to a reporter about how the former Spice Girl felt full of “rage and recrimination” after learning about what her husband said in the interview.
She was then seen looking tearful in Australia.
David had told The Project after being asked about the secret to the success of his relationship: “When you’ve been married for the amount of time that we have, it’s always hard work. It becomes a little more complicated.”
David, who was speaking to Project host Lisa Wilkinson, said the focus was on their children.
“I think marriage, marriage is always about hard work,” he answered.
“You know your children – they want your time and they deserve your time, and we are hardworking, and we feel that that is the right way to bring up our children to prove and to show to them that actually, you have to work hard to be successful.”
Regarding the media war between the couple, Bower wrote: “Reflecting the acrimony between the Beckhams, the two publicists began to compete rather than collaborate to promote their own client. Both fed negative stories about the other side to their favourite tabloid journalists.”
Another such story involved a family holiday where Victoria reportedly told her children “daddy’s not a cheat”.
The couple’s relationship became more strained in 2016 when Victoria lived with their children in London while building her fashion label, and David worked in Miami.
“During London Fashion Week that year, she asked Beckham to return to London for a dinner … By the end of the celebration she must have wished he had stayed in America. “Some whispered that the two had been embroiled earlier in a foul-mouthed row.”
David was seen taking a flight to New York later than night, Bower wrote.
The next year there was more tension, this time at Glastonbury when David arrived a day early with his entourage and partied until 5am with models.
“With her entourage she headed in a golf buggy through the scruffy campers to the VIP zone. She was furious that her husband had failed to reply to her telephone calls,” Bower writes.
“Eventually, David appeared. Within seconds, they were embroiled in a ferocious argument.”

The Beckhams, who are worth a combined $778 million, were together for one main reason.
“They stuck together to support the Brand (sic),” Bower writes.
The couple also revealed their marriage woes in the Netflix docuseries Beckham, which follows David’s meteoric rise from working-class beginnings to global soccer stardom. Victoria confessed that “were against each other” at their lowest point, while David said; “I don’t know how we got through it”.
