Oprah reveals truth about ‘serious’ illness - news.com.au

Oprah Winfrey has revealed she went to the emergency room suffering dehydration, following reports the talk show queen was rushed to hospital with a “serious” illness.

The US broadcaster, 70, was scheduled to appear on CBS Mornings in New York on Tuesday, local time, with the show’s host Gayle King giving viewers a little too much information when explaining her absence, saying Winfrey couldn’t make it because of a “stomach flu” which saw “stuff coming out of both ends.”

King, 69, added Winfrey’s flu was a “very serious thing”, triggering frantic headlines about her wellbeing.

Clarifying reports via a Zoom interview with King on Wednesday, which the host uploaded on Instagram, Winfrey said she was struggling to drink water while battling her condition, and so self-admitted to hospital to get an IV drip.

“It was actually the emergency room … I couldn’t keep enough water down to keep hydrated and I went to the emergency room for that, and that’s just it,” Winfrey said.

“I’m not 100 [per cent] … I will say, keep your hands washed. Doctors told me it [the virus] lives on railings and door knobs for 10 hours.”

King, for her part, said her comments on-air had been taken out of context, arguing she shared the information overload to explain Winfrey’s absence.

“The point I was trying to make,America, is that it would have to be something that would keep her from getting on a plane and coming,” King said.

“I was too weak to get on the plane,” Winfrey added.

King said she hoped Winfrey wasn’t “upset” at her for triggering alarm bells, to which the veteran journalist assured her she wasn’t.

“I thought what you were trying to do is trying to explain why I wasn’t there and doing that interview,” Winfrey said.

“Everyone I ever known that has access to my email, called me to ask if I’m all right.”

It comes months after Winfrey revealed she shed almost 20kg using a weight loss medication — similar to Ozempic – though she didn’t specify which drug she had taken.

“The fact that there’s a medically approved prescription for managing weight and staying healthier, in my lifetime, feels like relief, like redemption, like a gift — and not something to hide behind and once again be ridiculed for,” she told People in December.
