Star’s shocking claim: Axed for being gay - news.com.au

Matt Bomer has claimed that he was rejected for the role of Superman after movie bosses learned he was gay.

Bomer revealed during The Hollywood Reporter’sAwards Chatter podcast that he allegedly lost out on landing the lead role for axed DC film Superman: Flyby because bosses didn’t want the iconic American superhero to be played by a gay man.

Bomer was so close to the role that he even signed a three-picture deal with Warner Bros, but the films never materialised.

“It looked like I was the director’s choice for the role,” Bomer said. “I signed a three-picture deal at Warner Bros.”

When asked on the podcast whether his sexual orientation affected his casting, Bomer said, “Yeah, that’s my understanding. That was a time in the industry when something like that could still really be weaponized against you. How, and why, and who [outed me], I don’t know.”

Bomer even left his regularly role on US soap opera Guiding Light amid the audition process for Superman.

“I went in on a cattle call for Superman, [which] turned into a one-month audition experience where I was auditioning again and again and again,” Bomer said.

“On Guiding Light, there was a killer in town, […] so the executive producer, very kindly, wanted to free me up just in case the [Superman] job came through. So [the Guiding Light producer] said, ‘Hey, you’re going to be the killer. We’re writing you off the show; go with my blessing.’ So, I basically got fired, but in a generous way.”

Bomer wasn’t publicly out during the audition process, eventually coming out in 2012 when he thanked his partner Simon Halls during an acceptance speech.

While it’s the first time Bomer has spoken about the allegations, it’s not the first time they’ve been made.

In 2012, late author Jackie Collins claimed the actor had been stopped from playing Superman because of his sexuality.

She told Gaydar Radio: “Matt Bomer, who is the most gorgeous looking guys and the star of White Collar, he had not come out of the closet, but people in the know knew he was gay.

“His audition tape went in and he called up the agent and somebody didn’t like him and told [the producers] he was gay. They said, ‘No, no, we can’t cast you.’ The reason he didn’t get cast was because he was gay.”
