Sporting megastar hits back at residents opposing mosque he's helping build - Nine Shows

Sonny Bill Williams has hit back at residents opposing a new mosque he's helping build in the Sydney suburb of Carlton.

Williams addressed neighbours' concerns directly for the first time on A Current Affair.

"I've been hit up so many times to do this and all I want is some fair reporting," Williams told me.

Williams said allegations of him using social media to promote future events at the mosque that will exceed the number of people allowed in the venue are "unfair".

"Me being loud on social media is because I'm proud. That's it. Not all the Muslims in Sydney are going to come here," Williams said.

The mosque is currently under construction opposite aged care worker Roslyn's house.

"I might be working day, night, or morning shift. How am I going to get to sleep? What about us? We are the ratepayers," Roslyn said.

Roslyn's daughter Stella claims her mother's been intimidated by men who have removed protest signs from their front fences.

"I'm Maltese, we speak Arabic, we know what they are saying and they are intimidating my mother and that is something that should not be going on anywhere in Australia," Stella said.

Williams called for calm from anyone going rogue.

"Come on boys, we want to have this place as a hub for our kids to learn about our beautiful religion and making that possible. We have to make relationships around us," Williams said.
