Duchess of York undergoes emergency surgery after cancer diagnosis - TODAY Show

People the world over are being reminded of the importance of regularly checking their breasts after a shock cancer diagnosis for one of the British Royals.

Sarah 'Fergie' Ferguson released a statement this morning, confirming she was recovering from surgery after malignant cells were detected following a routine mammogram.

"It has been quite major surgery, so obviously there were concerns about the extent to which the cancer perhaps had spread in the breast," Daily Telegraph UK associate editor Camilla Tominey told Today.

But Tominey said she understood, based off early reports, the prognosis was good and after being in hospital for five days she is now recovering back home with her family.

"She still lives with her ex-husband the Duke of York at Windsor, she has lived there for many years, even though they are divorced, they are still very close and she is there with her children and taking comfort in her grandchildren," she said.

"She has thanked her doctors and spokespeople are saying she is in recuperation mode and there is no further surgery needed."
