An Aussie songwriter could not believe his ears when he heard Ed Sheeran’s new song, given how similar it was to a song he wrote months earlier.
An Australian songwriter could not believe his ears when he heard Ed Sheeran’s touching new song, Visiting Hours, given how similar it was to a song he wrote months earlier.
Sheeran wrote the song in hotel quarantine in Australia in March before performing it at Michael Gudinski’s memorial service.
The song will be featured on his new album, =, which will be released in October.
In a bizarre coincidence, the song just happens to be eerily similar in parts to a track that Aussie Nick Gill (who writes songs under the name ‘The January Choir’) wrote late last year.
There is no suggestion whatsoever that Sheeran has ever heard Gill’s song or was influenced by it in any way.
Gill’s song, Stormy Weather, features vocalist Abbi Yeo and was produced by former Australia’s Got Talent runner-up Matt McLaren.
Gill never released the full song online but did share a few snippets from the recording process on his Instagram account in January.
“Realistically, Ed Sheeran would not have heard this song, but I guess there are only so many ideas in the world,” Gill told news.com.au. “Even though the songs are almost note-for-note for a fair passage, it’s just one of those coincidences.
“It could be seen as frustrating that Ed had the same idea as me and will have millions of people hear his idea. Instead I like to look at the positive that, for just a brief moment, I had the same idea as someone I consider the premier songwriting artist of our time.”
Gill is a former AFL player who currently co-hosts Newcastle’s Hit FM breakfast show, Nick, Jess and Ducko.
