So much has changed this year on The Voice, and fans are not holding back their disappointment with the new format.
The Voice has hardly begun, but it feels like it’s already over. And that’s probably because of the very rushed, new format.
Gone are the days of the Battle rounds, arguably one of the best parts of the show, following close behind the Blind Auditions.
This year, there isn’t even a chance for the coaches to save performers that lose in the Battles.
Instead, the contestants advanced to The Cut where they had to sing on the spot in a dimly lit studio to win a spot in the Knockouts.
Basically, the entire show has been shaken up, and fans aren’t loving it.
With the coaches having an unlimited amount of chair-turns, it meant that they were a little more relaxed about who they would let into their teams. A good thing for any performers who were auditioning at the tail end of the Blinds. However, it meant that the next phase of the show was brutally short and unsubstantial.
The coaches were only allowed to bring five members from their team from the Blind Auditions to the Knockouts, and with some teams having 12-14 members, it meant viewers has no chance to emotionally connect with any of them, let alone have a chance to hear them properly sing.
With a huge chunk of the contestants dropped during the Cut round, fans were quick to express their disappointment in this new format.
“This format doesn’t allow for us to connect with the contestants. Couldn’t care less who wins when people are dumped after a 10-second sound bite,” one person wrote on social media.
“This whole cut experience was so sh**ty, they got rid of so many people who we had all grown to love and we barely had time to see them go,” another said.
“The ‘cut’ was grossly unfair and terrible TV. So disappointing for viewers,” another remarked, with a different user adding: “Silly format, lost interest quickly.”
Things weren’t much better during the Knockouts, with the coaches only taking two members out of their five into the semi-finals.
Even worse were some of the new rules, which allow coaches to drop a member of their team instantly after performing live – which was disheartening to say the least.
Especially for Halimah Kyrgios, tennis legend Nick Kyrgios’ sister. Halimah sung an amazing rendition of This Is Me from The Greatest Showman, and was immediately dropped by Rita Ora because she couldn’t envision what to do with her in the future.
While all eliminations are hard, it would have been nice for the viewers to see more of their talents, especially the ones who were cut from the show immediately after the Blinds.
Following the two-night Knockout round, Guy Sebastian decided to take Bella Taylor-Smith and Jordan Fuller to the Semi-Finals.
Keith Urban went with Arlo Sim and Lau Abend.
Rita Ora will be taking on girl band G-Nation and Sian Fuller.
Jessica Mauboy decided on Ella Monnery and Mick Harrington.
Sunday night will be the first night of the Semi-Finals, which will no doubt showcase a lot more of the final eight performers’ talents. Something we’re sure viewers are excited about.
