The Project looks at study that claims being a good bullsh*tter is a sign of intelligence - NEWS.com.au

Being a good bullsh*tter is a sign of intelligence, according to a recent study that was explored on The Project.

“I’m not making this up, but new research shows people who can bullsh*t well are more intelligent than their peers,” said host Lisa Wilkinson. “Dubbed Bullsh*tters by Canadian psychologists, this clever cohort were also found to be less likely to do so. The people most willing to lie were also the worst at it and the most gullible.

“I know I’m using those words in the 6.30 timeslot but I’m being told it’s OK because it is attached to research which is a technical term.”

The research was revealed this week, when a study published in the scientific journal Evolutionary Psychology saw that researchers found people who are better at making up explanations for various concepts are actually be more intelligent than those who struggle to come up with an excuse.

Researchers used 1017 participants in two different studies that examined correlations between cognitive ability, the willingness to lie, and the ability to do it well.

They found that most participants who were able to generate satisfying or seemingly accurate definitions of fake concepts that were shown to them, also scored higher on a vocabulary test. Most also aced abstract reasoning and non-verbal fluid intelligence tests, which measured their ability to analyse and solve problems.

“We find that those more skilled in producing satisfying and seemingly accurate bullsh*t score higher on measures of cognitive ability and are perceived by others as more intelligent,” the study concluded.

“Overall, the ability to produce satisfying bullsh*t may serve to assist individuals in navigating social systems, both as an energetically efficient strategy for impressing others and as an honest signal of one’s intelligence.”

“Who says research isn’t cool?” added Waleed Aly on The Project.

Peter Helliar had a hot take on the whole study, claiming, “Unless there was no study and the researchers are master bullsh*tters.”

“You just blew this up,” laughed Aly.
