An Australian star has opened up about the time he “told off” Zac Efron to his face.
TV and radio presenter Gus Worland is the latest guest on Samantha Armytage’s Stellar podcast, Something To Talk About.
In addition to being a celebrity in his own right, Worland is also best mates with Hugh Jackman, and in the podcast he discussed some of the famous people he had met through the Wolverine star.
Worland said that in 2016 he was in New York with Jackman and they had tickets to an NFL game.
Jackman was shooting The Greatest Showman at the time with Efron, and he asked the younger actor to come along to the football.
“He [Jackman] said, ‘We’re in the Giants’ owners box and Zac’s going to be there and I’m a bit of a father figure to him,’” Worland said. “I said, ‘Make sure Zac’s on time though ’cause I like to be an hour early rather than a minute late.’”
Spoiler: Efron was not on time.
“Zac was late and I was sitting there just spewing,” Worland told Armytage. “They had this whole tour ready for us which got missed completely because he was an hour late.”
Things went from bad to worse when the trio hopped in a car to head to the game.
“He [Efron] then turns up and he’s got this CD of some rapper that is one of his best mates and he wanted Jacko to listen to it,” Worland said. “So he takes over control of the music and I’m sitting in the back and I’m listening to this rapper … And I’m just like, ‘That’s crap!’
“I’m late, I’ve missed the tour and so forth, so Zac’s not my favourite bloke,” Worland said.

When they arrived at the game, Worland decided to have a word with Efron about his rude behaviour.
“I said, ‘Zac, let me just give you a couple of tips. Firstly, I don’t care who you are. B, you’re late and you haven’t apologised yet and Jacko’s too nice to say it and … you’ve really F’ed up our day,’” Worland said.
“He just stood there,” he said about Efron. “I don’t think anyone has ever told him off.
“From that moment on he was just like a little puppy. He was like, ‘I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to be.’ It was actually a beautiful conversation,” Worland said.
“He [Efron] left at three-quarter time. I just looked at Jacko and I said, ‘You’ve got to be a father figure to that boy,’” Worland told Armytage. “Sometimes you just need to give these guys a bit of a cuddle and a bit of home truths.”
In the episode of Something To Talk About, Worland also spoke about Gotcha4Life, a not-for-profit foundation he established due to the alarming statistics surrounding suicide in Australia. And he also revealed that Jackman is a bit of a tight arse.
