Prince Charles' plans to slim down the monarchy will see Harry and Meghan's son Archie denied title of prince, reports - 9Honey

Prince Charles' long-reported plans to slim down the monarchy when he becomes King is now rumoured to exclude his grandson Archie from ever becoming a prince.

The move is said to have angered Prince Harry and Meghan and is believed to be behind damming accusations levelled against the Prince of Wales from his youngest son.

Prince Charles will reportedly have a small number of working royals performing official duties when he becomes King under plans to slim down the monarchy.

He is understood to be wanting to change legal documents that would exclude Harry and Meghan's son Archie from being one of them, according to the Mail on Sunday quoting a source close to the Sussexes.

Rules set down by George V – the Queen's grandfather – in 1917 put strict limits on who becomes a prince or princess, limiting the number of royal highnesses within the family.

He decreed that only the children of the monarch, and grandchildren of the monarch in the male line, would be given the title.

Queen Elizabeth intervened ahead of Prince George's birth to issue a Letters Patent to ensure all the Cambridges' children, not just George, would have royal titles.

However, the three Cambridge children are the offspring of a future monarch (Prince William), whereas Harry and Meghan's children Archie and Lilibet, are not.

Under the current rules, when Prince Charles becomes King, Archie and Lilibet will, technically, be entitled to be known as His/Her Royal Highness and a prince/princess.

But Prince Charles is reportedly wanting to make changes to the Letters Patent to make them ineligible for the titles.

The move would mean Harry and Meghan's children would not receive full titles, financial support from the public purse through the Sovereign Grant and police protection funded by the taxpayer.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were reportedly told about these plans ahead of their interview with Oprah Winfrey in March 2021.

According to the Mail on Sunday, insiders close to Harry and Meghan suggest the issue was still raw at the time of the recording, which could account for the amount of explosive accusations they issued towards the royal family.

The rumours about Prince Charles' plans to deny Archie of a royal title would have been "leaked" to the media by Harry and Meghan.

Charlie Rae, a former royal editor at The Sun, said "this has been leaked by a friend or a source from the Sussexes camp".

Had Harry and Meghan chosen not to step down from their places as senior working royals in 2020, they would have been included in that small group.

During their interview with Oprah, Prince Harry and Meghan caused a stir by suggesting their son was denied a royal title by the palace in a move that was "different from protocol".

Meghan brought in the issue of racism when speaking about her son's lack of a royal title.

The duchess told Oprah: "They didn't want him to be a prince….which would be different from protocol ... we have in tandem the conversation of, 'He won't be given security. He's not going to be given a title.'

"And also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he's born."

Meghan said she wanted Archie to be a prince so he could have police protection.

But before Archie's birth Harry and Meghan had insisted that he be styled 'Master' instead, according to royal sources who spoke to Sunday Times in May 2019.

They added that the Sussexes were not using a title for their son in the hope that he would live a more normal life, instead wanting him to be known as a "private citizen".

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex also declined to give their son the aristocratic title of Earl of Dumbarton, which he was entitled to. If he had, Lilibet may have been able to have the courtesy title of Lady.
