Britney Spears has claimed she is being abused and exploited by her family and carers in a conservatorship that has been in place for the past 13 years.

The dramatic statement at a Los Angeles hearing came with her first words in open court on the conservatorship.
The 39-year-old told the court her father, Jamie Spears, co-conservator of her estate, "should be in jail".
Speaking on a phone link, she described a life where she was not in control of her money or care plan, saying "I just want my life back".
"I'm done", she said, comparing her situation during a period of what she said was enforced rehab as being akin to being a victim of sex trafficking.
"I truly believe this conservatorship is abusive," she said, asking for the judge to end it without her being forced to undergo an evaluation.
She said she deserves to live her life.
"I'm so angry and I cry every day.
"This conservatorship is doing me way more harm than good.
"I deserve to have a life."
Spears said she wants to marry her boyfriend and have a baby, but the conservatorship won't allow her to.
About 100 fans from the so-called #FreeBritney movement gathered outside the courthouse before the hearing, holding signs that read "Free Britney now!" and "Get out of Britney's life!"

Jennifer Preston, 33, crossed the US from Richmond, Virginia, to be outside the hearing because she says: "I’m a mom and I’m a fan."
"We’re here to hear what she has to say," Ms Preston said.
"She’s been treated like a child for the last 13 years, she hasn’t had control of her life or her finances, even though she’s clearly capable enough to do those things."

But in recent court filings, Spears has sought a greater say over who runs the conservatorship, and has asked that her father, who had extensive power over her life and money for most of its existence, be removed.

The judge declined to remove James Spears entirely, though he now plays a smaller role.
He serves as co-conservator of her finances along with estate management firm the Bessemer Trust, and in 2019 relinquished his role as conservator over his daughter's life choices to a court-appointed professional.

“I have no idea,” she said, answering a fan who asked when she planned to take the stage.
Spears has spoken in court about the conservatorship before, but the courtroom was always cleared and transcripts sealed.
The last time she was known to have addressed the judge was in May 2019.
The singer has never asked the court to end the conservatorship entirely, although she has emphasised in documents that she reserves the right to do so at any time.

Her father and his attorneys have emphasised that she and her fortune, which court records put at more than $US50 million, remains vulnerable to fraud and manipulation.
Under the law, the burden would be on Spears to prove she is competent and free to make her own choices.
